(Minghui.org) An 81-year-old man in Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province, completed a 12-year prison term on April 11, 2022, only to learn that his pension had been suspended while he was still in jail. Nearly four years later, his pension is still yet to be reinstated.
The Jinshantun District Social Security Bureau in Yichun City stopped Mr. Wang Zhiqian’s pension because he was sentenced for his faith, Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
As Mr. Wang held firm to his faith during and after his imprisonment, the social security bureau continued to withhold his retirement benefits following his prison release, despite his repeated appeals. He struggled to get by without any other income source.
Besides the financial persecution, Mr. Wang also faced constant surveillance after he was released. The local police and community workers harassed him at home all the time. He and his wife, Ms. Li Yanrong, also a Falun Gong practitioner, later moved to Harbin (the capital city of Heilongjiang Province), but the police there and their counterparts in Yichun still harassed the couple.
Because Mr. Wang suffered severe hearing loss as a result of abuse he suffered in prison, Ms. Li was the one who opened the door to the police every time they came to harass them. Ms. Li had also been arrested many times and served one year of forced labor for practicing Falun Gong. The relentless harassment caused her tremendous mental stress. She lived in fear. Her health also declined, and she suffered a rapid heartbeat and palpitations. She took a fall in May 2025 and died shortly afterward.
