(Minghui.org) A 74-year-old woman became emaciated shortly after she was admitted to prison to serve a four-year term for her faith in Falun Gong. Upon her family’s strong protest, her situation in prison has improved.

Ms. Liang Shaolin

Ms. Liang Shaolin, of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, was arrested on January 29, 2024. When her lawyer visited her at the Baiyun District Detention Center on March 1, 2024, the guards ordered her to wear handcuffs during the visit. She refused to comply, and the guards canceled the visitation.

The police submitted Ms. Liang’s case to the Liwan District Procuratorate in mid-May 2024. She was indicted by prosecutor Chen Yu on July 19, 2024.

Judge Huang Feifei of the Liwan District Court held a virtual hearing on September 5, 2024, with Ms. Liang remaining at the detention center. As she refused to attend the hearing, the guards restrained her in a wheelchair and wheeled her into a conference room for the virtual trial. Judge Huang sentenced her to four years at a later time without informing her family. She was admitted to the 4th Division at Guangdong Province Women’s Prison in February 2025.

When Ms. Liang’s family visited her in June 2025, they were saddened to see that she was merely skin and bones. She told them that because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, the guards didn’t allow her to use toilet paper or other things to clean herself. To reduce her restroom use, she ate very little food and sometimes nothing at all.

Ms. Liang’s family complained to the guards and warned that they would escalate the matter to higher authorities if the abuse continued. When they visited Ms. Liang again in July 2025, she had gained back some weight.

Previously Incarcerated for Over 14 Years

Ms. Liang, 73, used to work for the Maoming Petrochemical Corporation and won several awards. In October 1999, three months after the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong, she went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice her faith, but was arrested midway. She held a seven-day hunger strike to protest the detention and was released. The police arrested her again, not long after, and gave her two years of forced labor. As she remained firm in Falun Gong, the authorities extended her term by three months and transferred her to several brainwashing centers after her extended term expired. She wasn’t released until March 31, 2005.

A group of officers of the Maoxi Police Department opened Ms. Liang’s home with a chainsaw on the morning of September 24, 2009. For a year after that, her family was kept in the dark about any information about her. It wasn’t until September 2010 that they confirmed that she had been sentenced to nine years in May of that year.
