Heilongjiang Man Sentenced to 5.5 Years for Practicing Falun Gong

(Minghui.org) Mr. Yang Chuanhou from Suihua City, Heilongjiang Province, was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison on May 9, 2025, for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.

Mr. Yang and his wife Ms. Song Hongwei have been repeatedly targeted because they practice Falun Gong. They were arrested one week apart in October 2018. Mr. Yang was later sentenced to two years and Ms. Song to one year and a half. They were both brutally tortured while in custody.

Ms. Song was arrested again in September 2022 and sentenced to six years. While Mr. Yang escaped the arrest, he was put on the police wanted list.

Mr. Yang was arrested in Harbin City on September 29, 2024, by police from Zhaodong City, which is under the jurisdiction of Suihua City. The police beat him, causing multiple injuries to his head and body. He had burning pain in his chest and couldn’t turn his body when he slept. The police also impounded his car.

On October 14, 2024, after he was held for 15 days at the Zhaodong City Detention Center, Mr. Yang was released. When his younger brother went to the Zhaodong City Police Department to demand Mr. Yang’s car be returned, the police said Mr. Yang had to make the request in person.

The police returned the car when Mr. Yang went to the police department on October 23, 2024, but they arrested him on the spot and put him in criminal detention. He was first held at the Suihua City Detention Center and then transferred to the Hailun District Detention Center. He was later indicted by the Hailun District Procuratorate and sentenced to 5.5 years by the Hailun District Court on May 9, 2025.
