(Minghui.org) An 87-year-old woman in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, was sentenced to three years in March 2023 for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999. Due to her persistent health issues, Ms. Liang Shuzhi was repeatedly denied admission to the detention center where she was ordered to serve time. The judge who convicted her, however, threatened to take her to the detention center every month until she’s admitted.
Ms. Liang was arrested at home on June 8, 2021, after the police claimed that a surveillance camera captured her placing Falun Gong materials on cars near a police station in March 2021. By monitoring her daily activities, they also discovered that other practitioners were printing materials at her home. They threatened to put her in prison as this was a “serious crime.” She was tried in the Liaozhong District Court on February 8, 2023, and sentenced to three years on March 27, 2023.
The Shenyang City First Detention Center denied Ms. Liang admission due to her health. She was then put on bail and subjected to close surveillance by the local police and community workers.
Judge Lin Xiaojiao attempted to have Ms. Liang taken back into custody in September 2024, but she was still deemed unfit for detention. The Shenyang City Procuratorate, however, urged Lin to admit Ms. Liang to jail as soon as possible. Lin instructed Maluwan Police Station officers to take her to the detention center on December 30, 2024, but Ms. Liang again failed the physical exam and was denied admission.
After leaving the detention center in the suburb of Shenyang, Lin ordered the police to drop Ms. Liang off far from her home. Ms. Liang had to take a taxi to get back. Before she left, Lin threatened to take her to the detention center once a month after the Chinese New Year in early February 2025—until she was admitted.
