An 83-year-old woman in Jining City, Shandong Province passed away in June 2025, shortly after she was released from prison on medical parole.
Ms. Miao Xianmin was arrested on August 8, 2023, while talking to fellow shoppers at a wholesale market about the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing persecution of her faith, Falun Gong.
During a hearing by the Rencheng District Court on August 26, 2023, her daughter noticed that Ms. Miao was unable to walk on her own, suspecting that she might have been tortured at the detention center. The following day, the judge sentenced Ms. Miao to two years and three months with a fine of 4,000 yuan.
Ms. Miao was admitted to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison in the capital of Jinan in September 2023. Due to her poor health, her family applied for medical parole for her several times, but the prison didn’t approve it until Ms. Miao was on the verge of death. She died shortly after she returned home.
Prior to her latest sentencing, Ms. Miao was arrested on June 19, 2001, while visiting another practitioner. The police pushed her into a police van and took her to the Fuqiao Police Station. She was handcuffed and kept in a metal cage for 24 hours. The police ordered her to renounce her belief and force-fed her. She was taken to the Jining City Lockup days later. The guards there removed all her clothes and forced her to squat in a corner to humiliate her.
The police later gave Ms. Miao three years of forced labor. While serving time at the Jinan Women’s Forced Labor Camp, the guards ordered her to sit motionless on a small stool for long hours. She would be kicked and verbally abused if she moved even a little. She was also forced to work long hours without pay, with only five minutes or less per day to wash herself. Besides being subjected to forced labor and brainwashing, her sleep and restroom use were also restricted.
Ms. Miao was arrested again on June 9, 2020, while walking on the street. She was held at the police station for a day and released after midnight.
