(Minghui.org) A Chongqing resident is awaiting verdict after a hearing on November 12, 2025 for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.

Ms. Liu Fanqin, 74 and a former manager at the Beibei District Optical Instrument Factory, was arrested on April 27, 2025. She was held at the Beibei Detention Center and issued a formal arrest warrant on May 12. The Beibei District Procuratorate transferred her case to the Jiangbei District Procuratorate on June 22 and the latter indicted her on September 11. She was tried by the Jiangbei District Court on November 12. The Chongqing Political and Legal Affairs Committee and Justice Bureau didn’t allow her lawyer to enter a not guilty plea for her.

Ms. Liu took up Falun Gong in 1994 and soon recovered from many ailments, including severe rhinitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis. After the persecution started, she held firm to her faith and has been repeatedly targeted.

Ms. Liu was first arrested in August 1999 and detained overnight at the Beibei Police Station. The police attempted to force her to renounce Falun Gong but failed.

Ms. Liu went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in January 2000. She was arrested and escorted back to Chongqing. She was held at the Beibei Detention Center and later given one year at the Maojiashan Forced Labor Camp, where she was forced to work over ten hours a day without pay. The guards also made her read propaganda materials demonizing Falun Gong and subjected her to intense corporal abuse. Her term was extended by nine months. The police also ordered her to pay the several thousand yuan travel cost they incurred traveling to Beijing to take her back. She did not have money and they deducted the travel expenses from her monthly pension payments for a few years until it was “paid off.”

As soon as Ms. Liu was released from the labor camp in November 2001, she was arrested again by 610 Office agents and taken to a nine-day brainwashing session hosted by the Beibei District Communist Party School.

Due to long term police surveillance and harassment, Ms. Liu was forced to live away from home in September 2002. She was arrested at her rental place on the evening of June 21, 2003, together with two other Falun Gong practitioners. Their computer, printer, blank discs, and over 10,000 yuan cash were confiscated. They were detained at the Dadukou District Detention Center.

The police handcuffed Ms. Liu behind her back and hung her up to the window frame, with her toes barely touching the ground. It was so painful that she had trouble breathing after half an hour. She was not allowed to eat, sleep or go to the restroom. They left her hanging like this for more than 30 hours; she passed out several times from the pain. Long before she was taken down, her numb arms had become disabled.

Ms. Liu was sent to several hospitals and the doctors told her that she had nerve damage in both arms and ligament damage in both shoulders, which were also dislocated. The doctors said there was no hope of regaining function in her arms.

In March 2004, Ms. Liu exposed the rape of a female Falun Gong practitioner by a police officer in the detention center. In retaliation, the Dadukou District Court sentenced her to nine years in prison. She appealed with the Chongqing First Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold the original verdict. She was admitted to the Yongchuan Women’s Prison in August 2005.

While in the prison, Ms. Liu was forced to sit still on a small stool for over ten hours a day; her purchase of daily necessities was restricted; and she wasn’t allowed to call her family. Later, the guards began to force her to work for long hours without pay. They said to her, “If you die, the government will just need to spend 80 yuan to cremate you. That would be it. What else would you expect?”

Ms. Liu was released from the prison on December 20, 2011. By practicing Falun Gong, she miraculously recovered and regained the ability to take care of herself a year later.
