While still mourning the deaths of their parents due to the persecution of Falun Gong, two sisters in Huailai County, Hebei Province, were heartbroken to lose their brother, a 50-year-old physician.
The family’s ordeal began when the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline, in 1999. For upholding their shared faith, Mr. Li Yushu, his wife, Ms. Ni Wenxiu, their two daughters and one son were all subjected to non-stop arrests, detention, and harassment. Ms. Ni passed away following a harassment episode in November 2023. Succumbing to years of detention and forced drug administration, Mr. Li died six months later, on May 25, 2024. Their son, Mr. Liu Zhaohui, was so devastated that he passed away eight months later, on January 6, 2025.
Mr. Liu Zhaohui went to Beijing on November 1, 2000 to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. He was arrested days after he returned. The police raided his home and took him and his parents to the county government. They beat him and subjected him to electric shocks for over one hour.
Mr. Liu was arrested again at work in May 2001 and held at the county detention center for one week. In June 2001, the county 610 Office forced his workplace and local healthcare bureau to suspend him from work for four months. He was only given 150 yuan every month during the time to cover the most basic living costs. After Mr. Liu was forced to live away from home to avoid the persecution in December 2001, his workplace fired him. The police raided his home while he was away and confiscated many valuable items, including jewelry and Jingtailan enamels (Chinese cloisonne enamels).
Mr. Liu was arrested at a rental place in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, on May 9, 2002. The 2,000 yuan cash he had with him, his eyeglasses, Falun Gong books and clothes were confiscated. He was taken to the Zhangjiakou City Brainwashing Center in early August 2002 and transferred to the Huailai County Detention Center in early November 2002.
Mr. Liu was sentenced to seven years on August 25, 2003. He was admitted to the Jidong Prison in early January 2004. The guards arranged two inmates to monitor him around the clock. Due to the abuse, he suffered high blood pressure, bleeding in his eyes, and a meniscal rupture to his right knee. The prison denied him family visitation rights and correspondence during the Beijing Olympics around August 2008 and extended his term by two months. Mr. Liu was finally released in October 2008.
Years of persecution and harassment took a toll on Mr. Liu’s health. His parents’ passing was the last straw that led to his untimely death.
