Since the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Mr. Li Yushu and his family have never lived one day in peace. He, his wife, their two daughters and one son were all subjected to non-stop arrests, detention, and harassment. His wife Ms. Ni Wenxiu passed away following a harassment episode in November 2023. Succumbing to years of detention and forced drug administration, Mr. Li died six months later.
Mr. Li, of Huailai County, Hebei Province, took up Falun Gong in 1996. His wife, Ms. Ni Wenxiu, older daughter Ms. Liu Zhaoxia, second daughter Ms. Liu Zhaohong, and son Mr. Liu Zhaohui, also practiced Falun Gong. After the onset of the persecution in 1999, they were treated as key targets by the authorities.
Husband and Wife’s Persecution
Mr. Liu, his wife, older daughter and several other local practitioners did the Falun Gong exercises outdoors in October 2000 and were arrested.
In another incident, in retaliation for seeking the release of an illegally detained local practitioner, Mr. Liu was arrested again and held at the county government offices. He was beaten, verbally abused and subjected to electric shocks. The police stuffed his mouth with socks to prevent him from screaming during the torture.
During the Chinese Communist Party annual meetings in March 2001, Mr. Liu was arrested again and taken to a brainwashing center. After eight months of mental and physical abuse, he was forced to write a statement to renounce Falun Gong and then released.
Mr. Liu was arrested again in 2003 and given an unknown term of forced labor. Due to his high blood pressure, he was denied admission to the labor camp and released.
Following another arrest in March 2004, Mr. Liu was taken to the Zhangjiakou Brainwashing Center and held there for the next five years. When he was finally released in March 2009, most of his teeth had fallen out; his blood pressure remained dangerously high; and he struggled with systemic edema and memory loss. Over the next few years, his health continued to deteriorate. According to an insider, the brainwashing center’s staffer added toxic drugs to his food, which caused his symptoms.
After struggling with failing health for years, Mr. Liu passed away on May 25, 2024. He was 80.
Mr. Liu’s death came only six months after the passing of his wife Ms. Ni, who died shortly after being harassed by officers from the Tumu Police Station in late November 2023. She was around 79 years old.
Ms. Ni was also arrested and detained multiple times over the course of the persecution. She was once held in a brainwashing center for over 30 days and tortured for not renouncing Falun Gong.
Daughters’ Persecution
The couple’s older daughter, Ms. Liu Zhaoxia, a chemical engineer, was also arrested multiple times and given two years of forced labor. She once held a hunger strike to protest the persecution in a detention center in Beijing. The guards dumped her along the roadside when she on the verge of death. A good samaritan spotted her and helped her buy a train ticket to get back home. She was unrecognizable when she arrived home. Her husband, a military officer, divorced her to avoid repercussions due to the Chinese Communist Party’s implication policy.
Ms. Liu Zhaoxia’s younger sister, Ms. Liu Zhaohong, was forced to live away from home to hide from the police. She was later arrested and sentenced to five years. She was brutally tortured while in custody. Her husband also divorced her.
Son’s Persecution
The sisters’ brother, Mr. Liu Zhaohui, a doctor, went to Beijing on November 1, 2000 to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. He was arrested days after he returned. The police raided his home and took him and his parents to the county government. They beat him and subjected him to electric shocks for over one hour.
Mr. Liu was arrested again at work in May 2001 and held at the county detention center for one week. In June 2001, the county 610 Office forced his workplace and local healthcare bureau to suspend him from work for four months. He was only given 150 yuan every month during the time to cover the most basic living costs. After Mr. Liu was forced to live away from home to avoid the persecution in December 2001, his workplace fired him. The police raided his home while he was away and confiscated many valuable items, including jewelry and Jingtailan enamels (Chinese cloisonne enamels).
Mr. Liu was arrested at a rental place in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, on May 9, 2002. The 2,000 yuan cash he had with him, his eyeglasses, Falun Gong books and clothes were confiscated. He was taken to the Zhangjiakou City Brainwashing Center in early August 2002 and transferred to the Huailai County Detention Center in early November 2002.
Mr. Liu was sentenced to seven years on August 25, 2003. He was admitted to the Jidong Prison in early January 2004. The guards arranged two inmates to monitor him around the clock. Due to the abuse, he suffered high blood pressure, bleeding in his eyes, and a meniscal rupture to his right knee. The prison denied him family visitation rights and correspondence during the Beijing Olympics around August 2008 and extended his term by two months. Mr. Liu was finally released in October 2008.
