(Minghui.org) The artificial intelligence (AI) industry has made significant progress in recent years, going from basic research to commercialization. In the past, AI usually played a supporting role, but now it has gained more attention with a wide range of applications. Some believe AI’s impact will be similar to that brought on by the internet, or in some cases even more.
But this may be only one side of the story. In general, it could provide us some convenience in the short term. But sooner or later, human beings may gradually lose certain capabilities due to AI and thus ultimately pay a huge price.
First, AI is competing with human beings for job opportunities and it could replace many people's jobs. This could be software programming, writing, office management, data entry, customer service, assembly line manufacturing, retail jobs, translation, photography, and many more.
Second, AI could impact mankind’s learning ability, creativity, and decision-making. Learning is a process through which we could get to know more about our world, about ourselves, and constantly improving both for the better. With AI, mankind no longer needs to learn and improve as much, but instead directly go to the end result provided by a machine. As time goes on, people could get lazy and lose the ability to interact with the world, interact among ourselves, learn how to make decisions, and resolve problems.
Third, when AI spreads to more aspects of society and our lives, we could lose the ability to know what is going on in society, how to plan our lives, and more. When AI from different aspects of our lives – such as cell phones, computers, televisions, cars, home electronics – know how communicate with each other, true disasters could occur. We could lose our privacy, be taken to the wrong place when driving, get locked out of our cars or homes, and more.
Therefore, we have to be careful with AI before it is too late.
