(Minghui.org) While 86-year-old Ms. Geng Yingfeng, a resident of Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, is still serving time for practicing Falun Gong, her family is financially strained after paying her 30,000 yuan court fine and an additional 15,000 yuan in court fees.

Ms. Geng was arrested at home on August 15, 2017. She was detained at the Jingjiang City Detention Center for 16 days and released on September 1, 2017. It’s not clear why the police in Jingjiang, about 117 miles from Nanjing, were involved in her case.

Ms. Geng was made to stand trial at the Jingjiang City Court three months later. No verdict was announced, and she was released after 20 days of detention. She appeared in court again on March 22, 2018 and was sentenced to a three-year prison term by judge Wang Pin. Due to her poor health, the Taixing Prison refused to admit her and she was released on medical parole.

Ms. Geng was arrested again on August 26, 2019 while studying Falun Gong’s teachings with three other practitioners. She appeared in Yuhua District Court in Nanjing on an unknown date and was sentenced to two years with a 30,000-yuan fine. She was taken to Changzhou Women’s Prison in September 2021 to serve a combined term of four years. She is set to be released in June 2025.

Ms. Geng’s husband, a veteran in his 90s, went to the prison to visit her in late 2021, but was rejected.

The Yuhua District Court recently ordered Ms. Geng’s family to pay 45,000 yuan, even though she was fined only 30,000 yuan. The court claimed that the additional 15,000 yuan was the court fee. Because Ms. Geng’s daughter-in-law paid the fine, she could no longer afford to pay for her children’s school tuition.

Repeated Persecution

After beginning to practice Falun Gong in 1996, Ms. Geng recovered from several illnesses, including frozen shoulder, sciatica, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, and gynecological diseases. Following the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, she also became a better person well known in the community.

After former Chinese Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin began to suppress Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Geng was detained numerous times for her belief. She was once hung from a door frame by handcuffs, slapped and kicked by passing officers, as well as being deprived of sleep, food, and water.

Terrified by Ms. Geng’s other arrest on November 6, 2012, her 94-year-old mother died shortly after. Ms. Geng was later sentenced to three years, and suffered tremendous torture in prison.

Ms. Geng filed a criminal complaint in June 2015 to the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate against Jiang Zemin, for persecuting Falun Gong, only to face escalated harassment by the police.
