(Minghui.org) The family of Ms. Shen Yanqiao recently learned that she has been secretly sentenced to two years for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Shen, a Wuhan City, Hubei Province resident, was arrested in July 2021 and detained at the Wuhan City No. 1 Detention Center. The authorities denied her family visitation and kept them in the dark of her situation. Although her family confirmed that she has been taken to the Hubei Province Women’s Prison to serve a two-year term, they still don’t know when she was sentenced and by which court.
Prior to her latest sentencing, Ms. Shen served another four years for her faith. In 2020, the authorities suspended her pension, with the excuse that she wasn’t entitled to any retirement benefits during her prison term and that they were using her pension to pay back the funds she had received. Ms. Shen wrote several letters to the authorities, explaining that she was wrongfully sentenced and that no Chinese labor law stipulates denial of pension benefits to detainees during their terms. The authorities ignored her plea and arrested her again a year later and secretly sentenced her.
According to information collected by Minghui.org, at least 16 Falun Gong practitioners in Wuhan were sentenced to prison in 2021. Another 160 Wuhan practitioners were arrested and 136 were harassed.
