(Minghui.org) A 76-year-old former teacher has been on a hunger strike since early April 2022 to protest being arbitrarily detained for her faith in Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Liu Yumin of Laishui County, Hebei Province, was arrested at home on March 18, 2022, by several armed police officers. After a few days at the Laishui Town Police Station, she was taken to the Laishui County Lockup and criminally detained on March 27.
Her family received her arrest approval notice on April 13 from the Laishui County Procuratorate. They are now very worried about her.
Ms. Liu used to suffer a heart condition, arthritis, and stomach problems. Due to insufficient blood supply in her brain, she often fainted and had to quit her job as an elementary school teacher. Shortly after she began to practice Falun Gong in 1996, she recovered and returned to work.
When the persecution started in 1999, she was fired by the school for refusing to give up her faith. She also faced constant arrests, home-ransacking, and harassment. When she was detained, the officers beat her, hung her up, force-fed her, and burned her with lit cigarettes.
Her husband, Mr. Wu Yanshui, who also practiced Falun Gong, died on May 20, 2001, due to the abuse he suffered in custody.
The police ransacked Ms. Liu’s home again in July 2017. While she escaped arrest at that time, the police put her on the wanted list, leaving her and her family in constant fear of being persecuted again.
