(Minghui.org) A 78-year-old woman serving a three-year term for practicing Falun Gong has been denied visits or phone calls with her family, because she refused to renounce her faith, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Zhang Yun is blind in one eye and sees poorly out of her left, so her family is very worried about her. Her daughter, Ms. Dong Mei, is also serving time in the same prison for their shared faith.
Ms. Zhang’s family recently confirmed that she is having difficulty eating due to issues with her teeth. She had a stomachache after eating rice and has vomited many times. The guards assigned two inmates to monitor her. They were ordered to follow her when she used the restroom. Not wanting to disturb their sleep at night, Ms. Zhang avoided drinking water during the day, so she wouldn’t have to use the restroom at night.
Ms. Zhang, who is from Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, was first arrested on December 4, 2019, with her daughter. She was released after 16 days of detention, but her daughter remained in custody and was sentenced to two years by the Shenhe District Court around November 9, 2020.
Ms. Zhang was arrested twice more, on March 12 and August 20, 2020. She was released the next day and placed on residential surveillance at home both times.
Ms. Zhang appeared in the Yuhong District Court at 9 a.m. on December 24, 2020. She was taken back into custody and admitted to the Shenyang City No.1 Detention Center after the hearing and transferred to the Liaoning Province No. 2 Women’s Prison on December 21, 2021, after being sentenced to three years. The guards assigned her to the Third Ward in January 2022.
