(Minghui) Volcano activity and earthquakes have recently struck different regions.
On October 9, 2021, the volcano of La Palma in the Canary Islands of Spain erupted again, engulfing nearby buildings with lava and causing lightning flashes.
Two days before the eruption, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred near the town of Masso in southeast of La Palma. The earthquake was felt in the vicinity of the town. This was the largest earthquake on the island since the eruption of the La Palma volcano began on September 19, 2021. The focal depth of this earthquake was 35 kilometers, which was much deeper than most earthquakes that have occurred on the island before.
According to the Spanish newspaper El País on October 9, 480 hectares of land have been affected by the lava since the volcano began to erupt on September 19. About 165 hectares of cultivated land with crops, 1,200 buildings and two schools have been destroyed. Several roads were cut off. About six thousand residents have been evacuated.
According to data provided by the regional government, the direct economic damage caused by the eruption to the island’s buildings, roads, crops and scenic spots has reached 400 million euros.
Seven volcanic eruptions have been reported on La Palma in recorded history, with the most recent occurring in 1971.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, on October 7, 2021, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred. Thirty-two people were reportedly injured. The epicenter was located in the northwestern part of Chiba Prefecture with a focal depth of 75 kilometers. This is the first time an upper 5 magnitude earthquake has been observed in Tokyo since the tsunami on March 11, 2011.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 struck southern Pakistan on October 7, 2021, with the epicenter located 102 kilometers east of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, at a depth of 20 kilometers. Twenty people were killed in their sleep, and nearly 200 others were injured. More than a hundred mud houses collapsed, and a large number of houses, including government buildings, were damaged.
