Former Epidemic Prevention Official Tortured in Prison and Hospitalized for Tuberculosis
(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Deyu, a resident in Jingmen City of Hubei Province, was sentenced to five years following his arrest in December 2016 for his faith in Falun Gong.
According to inmates recently released from Fanjiatai Prison, Mr. Liu had been subjected to brutal torture since he was admitted to prison in October 2018. The inmates said that Mr. Liu was diagnosed with tuberculosis and had been kept at the prison hospital.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a meditation system based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to suppress the practice in 1999, a large number of practitioners have been detained, imprisoned, and tortured.
Mr. Liu, 63, is a former official at Jingmen Epidemic Prevention Station. He was arrested many times for practicing Falun Gong. He was given three years of forced labor in January 2000. One month after he was released from the labor camp, he was taken to a brainwashing center and held for a month.
When Mr. Liu told others about Falun Gong on June 23, 2009, police officers beat and injured him. He managed to escape but had to stay away from home to avoid being arrested. He made a living selling socks in Zhijiang City, Hebei Province.
In July 2009, he was arrested again and sentenced to four years. He was not released from Fanjiatai Prison until August 2013.
While telling others about Falun Gong in December 2016, Ms. Liu was arrested again. He appeared in Dongbao Court on May 2, 2017. Months after the hearing, presiding judge Luo Jinhu sentenced him to five years, and he was taken to Fanjiatai Prison on October 29, 2018.
The guards once deprived him of sleep for three consecutive days. For a long time, he was prohibited from using the toilet or purchasing daily articles, such as toilet paper, toothpaste, and laundry detergent. He was also not allowed to call family.
Guards instructed inmates assigned to watch Mr. Liu to curse at his family members as well as the founder of Falun Gong. When Mr. Liu went on a hunger strike in protest, the guards tied him to a bed, inserted a plastic tube into his stomach, and force-fed him. The force-feeding lasted more than a month.
Because Mr. Liu refused to renounce his belief, the inmates forced him to drink his own urine. Mr. Liu became emaciated as a result of the physical abuse and mental stress.
Located in Shayang County, Fanjiatai Prison is a notorious place where practitioners are beaten, pricked, exposed to the elements, deprived of sleep, and subjected to psychiatric abuse and many other torture methods.
