(Minghui.org) Sixty-year-old Ms. Jiang Yuqin from the Zhangdian District in Zibo City, Shandong Province, was arrested at home on May 29. Her arrest was officially confirmed by the local court on June 7.
Ms. Jiang's arrest shocked her neighbors, who commented: “What kind of world is this? How can they take away such a good person?” “It is against the laws of heaven to arrest a person like her.” They visited her in the detention center and brought her food.
On May 29, over 20 police officers from the Zhangdian District broke into and searched her apartment. They took Falun Gong books and 6000 yuan in cash (roughly 1000 U.S. dollars). Both she and her husband were taken away. Her husband was soon released, but Ms. Jiang is being held in Zibo City Detention Center.
It has been confirmed that the Zhangdian District Procuratorate approved her arrest on June 7. It usually takes 14 to 37 days to ratify an arrest, but only 9 days in her case.
A Good Neighbor
Ms. Jiang Yuqin has a high reputation in her subdivision. Following the guiding principles of Falun Gong, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, she often helps her neighbors. Her late mother-in-law was paralyzed due to a stroke. In the five years before she passed away, Ms. Jiang took care of her like a full-time nurse.
Ms. Jiang has helped many people in her neighborhood. Because of her good reputation, she was elected to the position of monitor of the subdivision. A few days before her arrest, there was a serious problem in the sewage system in the subdivision. Estimates for the repair were high, and nobody was willing to pay for it. Ms. Jiang paid the bill herself and hired plumbers to fix the problem. The neighbors were touched and asked the neighborhood committee to reward her. (Note: The neighborhood committee is the lowest level governing body in China.)
The director of the neighborhood committee Li Cheng spoke to Ms. Jiang and learned that she practiced Falun Gong. Ms. Jiang told him that it was Falun Gong that motivated her to do such good deeds. Li thanked her.
Ms. Jiang's Arrest
However, on the eve of The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Qingdao, Shandong Province, the neighborhood committees in the area were ordered to report on the Falun Gong practitioners in their neighborhoods. Li Cheng turned Ms. Jiang's name in to the Zhangdian District government. The district government then informed the local 610 Office and the local National Security Brigade, who oversaw Ms. Jiang's arrest on May 29.
The arrest, which was documented on Minghui.org, drew the attention of human rights activists outside of China. They made phone calls to the district, city, and provincial law-enforcement agencies.
However, the government and law enforcement officials who answered those phone calls did not look into Ms. Jiang's case. The calls intimidated them, and they reacted by speeding up the ratification of the arrest.
Ms. Jiang has been held in a solitary cell for several days and pressured to give up her Falun Gong belief.
Her husband has heart problems, and the shock of her arrest has adversely affected his physical and mental health. Their child now is taking care of him.
One of Ms. Jiang's relatives had a chance to talk to the judge who is in charge of the Falun Gong cases in the Zhangdian District, Guo Jian. Guo said, “There is nothing I can do this time. Although I am the judge here, it is just a formality. Everything is decided by my superiors. I have to follow their orders. Not only this time—they decide all the Falun Gong cases. I've never had the power to make my own decision in these instances.”
We call for people inside and outside of China to pay attention to Ms. Jiang's case.
