(Minghui.org) China's communist regime had made claims to be shutting down its forced labor camp system by 2014. Instead, it appears the changes were mostly cosmetic, with some camps turned into “black jails” and brainwashing centers where groups targeted by the regime are detained.
In November of 2018, Mr. Wang Fengde was sentenced to the Xin'an Correctional Education Center in Daxing District for practicing Falun Gong. A Beijing court rejected his appeal and upheld a two-year sentence.
Wang Fengde was arrested along with his daughter, Ms. Wang Yanyan, on April 13, 2017. The two had filed a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader who ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999.
Yanyan's case was dismissed by the procuratorate in December 2017, but Wang Fende was indicted on January 4, 2018. He was sentenced to two years in prison by the Shunyi District Court on June 20, 2018, but filed an appeal.
Since the start of the persecution, the spiritual practice of Falun Gong has been a primary target of the CCP. Its persecution has impacted the lives of millions of Chinese citizens.
Falun Gong practitioners throughout the region who receive shorter sentences are routinely being sent to the Xin'an facility.
Once a forced labor camp, the Xin'an Correctional Education Center now uses a state program of oppression against practitioners, in an attempt to force them to renounce their beliefs.
Each practitioner is monitored by two inmates. After being awakened at 5:30 a.m., they are subjected to intense brainwashing throughout the day, before being allowed to go to bed at 10:30 p.m.
Physical Toll
Mr. Wang Rusheng (no relation to Mr. Wang Fengde) is also a Falun Gong practitioner, sent to Xin'an in early 2018 to serve a 1.5-year sentence.
Under the severe brainwashing program, his health has declined rapidly, and he developed tuberculosis after two months.
Although in his early 60s, the relentless brainwashing program has taken its toll on him physically. A guard told his family that he now looks like someone in his 80s.
Wang Fengde's family is worried that he may be suffering the same way at the center.
His wife is bedridden, and according to the family has suffered tremendous mental distress, after her husband and daughter were arrested.
She's become incontinent, and has lost a significant amount of weight.
