(Minghui.org) While a disabled woman remains detained following her arrest three months ago, her husband was recently taken into custody, leaving their 10-year-old son home alone.
Ms. Li Meihua, a resident in Liquan County, was targeted because she was reported for distributing materials exposing the Chinese communist regime’s persecution of Falun Gong, a mind-body practice based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
The 47-year-old woman, who became disabled due to a childhood illness, credits Falun Gong for enabling her to take care of herself and family. She still needs crutches, but she has no trouble doing household chores or farm work. As such, she uses every opportunity to tell people that Falun Gong is nothing like what is depicted by the state propaganda.
She gave some people Falun Gong information materials while visiting Zhashui County on October 10, 2017. More than 40 heavily armed police officers descended upon her house the very next day. Her husband, Mr. Yuan Yulong, demanded to see a search warrant. Though police went back to fetch one, they were annoyed by Mr. Yuan and arrested him on January 11, 2018.
Ms. Li remains at Zhashui County Detention after she was seized from home. Her lawyer traveled from Beijing to Zhashui on November 1. A detention center guard questioned who hired him, and he said it was Ms. Li’s daughter. The guard then asked how he got in touch with the daughter. This time he refused to answer, as he had no legal obligation to tell the detention center how he conducted his business.
The guard still refused to grant a meeting and claimed that the lawyer must seek approval from Dang Pingde, captain of Criminal Investigation Team at Zhashui County Police Department.
Upon the lawyer’s insistence, the guard called Dang, who was overheard saying, “We can’t allow a meeting with her lawyer! Get him out of there now!”
The lawyer next visited Zhashui County Police Department, but Guo Shuqin, head of Domestic Security Office who ordered Ms. Li’s arrest, refused to meet with him.
Police forwarded Ms. Li’s case to Zhashui County Procuratorate days after the lawyer’s visit. She is now facing indictment for her faith.
