A Police Officer's Cultivation Story
(Minghui.org) When growing up, I had to be on different medications and was weak. As a junior in college, I had cataracts, inflammation of the mucous lining of the nose, decayed teeth, and chronic bronchitis, among other ailments. I was treated in several big hospitals, but my health did not improve.
In college I joined several qigong practices and taught myself Taichi, but nothing seemed to help me. Eventually a classmate gave me the book Falun Gong, an introductory book to the cultivation practice with the same name. I read the book and within a month I was free of illness. That was 22 years ago.
Change in Attitude
I became a police officer after graduating from college. During the training, I ran into a conflict with a roommate, because I asked that he not curse. He got mad, jumped onto a table, and kicked me in the head in front of several other officers. I also became angry and was ready to teach him a lesson with my martial arts skills. But, I reminded myself that I was a practitioner and should forbear, so I walked out.
After I calmed down, I looked inward and wondered why the conflict happened. I realized that I disliked him because he was a bully, and thus did not treat him kindly. I changed, treated him better and helped him whenever he was in trouble. After a few weeks, he apologized. I told him that I did not treat him well in the past, which a practitioner should not do and I needed to correct myself. He was touched.
My department is in charge of local safety, transportation and crime prevention. Some police officers abuse their power for personal benefits. Some of them forced local taxi drivers to not charge them when they took their taxi, and also asked for bribes. Some also asked local dance hall owners for protection money.
Master Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, teaches us to consider other first. I used my power to help these people instead. If I went out with colleagues by taxi, I would pay the fare. Some taxi drivers dared not take money from me. I told them that I am a practitioner and asked them to accept the money.
Doing What's Right
Our department arrested a lot of prostitutes, and they were all crammed into a single room. As a practitioner, I knew that I should treat them compassionately. At first, I worried that my colleagues would make fun of me for helping these women. But after thinking about it, I realized that I should do what was right.
I took them to the bathroom and gave them what they needed to take care of their basic needs. Some of them were Muslim and did not eat the food we offered, so I bought them the appropriate food. I told them that I practiced Falun Gong.
I lived in the dormitory before I got married. When the water taps were broken in the building, nobody took care of them. I bought the materials needed and replaced them. I also cleaned the hallways. At first I worried about how it would be perceived, but then no longer cared what people thought of me and simply did what a practitioner should do.
When a colleague found out that I did all the repair work in the building, he arranged for me to be reimbursed for my expenses.
While I was on duty, my colleagues took care of their private matters or watched movies. Naturally, I did not do such things. Normally I was left alone on duty. When our supervisor checked on us, they were criticized. Many of them did not like to be on duty with me.
When my assigned partners did not want to take the same car to the duty location, I just walked there and back by myself. My colleagues talked about me behind my back. I got ill because of the pressure of the situation. Then I remember what Master said, “When it’s difficult to endure, you can endure it. When it’s impossible to do, you can do it.” (Zhuan Falun).
I felt better after I recited Master's Fa a few times, but the situation remained the same. I looked within and wondered if this situation bothered me. I found that I feared losing virtue. I earned my salary, but did not fulfill my duty. I knew that the moral standard is low in today's society, and I should not require ordinary people to act the same as a cultivator. I corrected myself and let go of my fear.
Once I changed, my relationship with my colleagues improved, and we got along well again.
Reciting the Fa
Knowing that reciting the Fa was wonderful, I decided to do it whenever possible. But I worked in shifts and my schedule changed all the time. I was bothered by this. Then, I was transferred to a different place.
The new job was on a fixed schedule and the workload was light. I began to spend a lot of time reciting Zhuan Falun, the main book of Falun Gong.I finished reciting the entire book within six weeks. I felt that I had improved on my cultivation path.
I have encountered many things that brought pressure to my life and affected my heart during my several years of police work. However, I have followed the Falun Gong principles and often saw Master's hints when it was time for me to improve.
