(Minghui.org) A Shenyang City resident serving 6 years for her faith has been suffering from dental problems, yet the prison has refused to render her medical attention, citing that her family has not deposited enough money into her prison account.
Ms. Shu Yu was arrested on February 21, 2014 for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime. She was later sentenced to 6 years and transferred to Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on April 29 of last year.
This is not the first time Ms. Shu has been targeted for her faith. She was fired from her job as the human resources director of the Dadong Branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank shortly after the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999.
Ms. Shu was arrested in 2001 and given two years of forced labor. She went on a hunger strike to protest the illegal detention but was met with brutal torture. The labor camp released her when she was on the verge of death. After she recovered, she went into hiding to avoid being taken back into custody.
The police never stopped looking for Ms. Shu, forcing her to move from place to place. They arrested her younger brother Mr. Shu Dong around late January of 2014 (during the Chinese New Year holiday season) and detained him for about one week. His father-in-law was traumatized by his arrest and passed away not long afterwards.
While Mr. Shu didn’t disclose his sister’s whereabouts, the police still managed to track her down just a few weeks later. They broke into her rental place on February 21 that year, when she was not home.
Ms. Shu returned home amidst the police search of her place. They beat her so badly that her arm was broken.
Ms. Shu had intended to appeal her prison sentence, but her family was hesitant because of intimidation from the local authorities. By the time they agreed to hire a lawyer for her, it was already past the appeal deadline.
Having firsthand experience with the Chinese regime’s treatment of Falun Gong practitioners, Ms. Shu was not optimistic about her six-year imprisonment.
When her lawyer met with her before her prison admission, she asked him to tell her family the following: “If I ever lost my life in prison, please know it must be a result of torture and abuse, as I’d never commit suicide. Please never allow the police to cremate my body. You must seek justice for me!”
Ms. Shu was pale when her family visited her recently. She complained about her tooth pain, but the prison has refused to offer her medical care. Her family worries that this may be only the beginning of extended suffering for Ms. Shu.
