After 12 Years of Imprisonment, Practitioner Faces New Trial

(Minghui.org) Mr. Zhang De, a Falun Gong practitioner in Haicheng City, was arrested by police from Nantai Township on June 28, 2016 for talking to people about Falun Gong. He now faces a court trial.

The police took Mr. Zhang to the Haicheng Detention Center. Prison guards and criminal inmates abused him for refusing to perform forced labor on the second day in the detention center.

His arrest was approved retroactively by the Haicheng Procuratorate on July 17. The Haicheng Court has scheduled a trial for September 20.

Previously Imprisoned for 12 Years

Mr. Zhang was previously given 2 years of forced labor and a 10-year prison term for practicing Falun Gong. He was subjected to many forms of torture in detention, including food deprivation, beatings, forced-feeding and being being made to squat for long periods.

When released from prison, his elderly mother said that she could not imagine how he had survived the labor camp conditions.

Background

Mr. Zhang, 40 years old, is an artist. After several years in the military, his health began to decline. He had major surgery in 1998 after he left military service. He began to practice Falun Gong following the surgery, and his health recovered quickly.

When Jiang Zemin, the former head of the communist regime, launched the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999, Mr. Zhang decided to peacefully demonstrate for the right to practice Falun Gong. He became a victim of the persecution, was taken to brainwashing centers, and his home was ransacked. Eventually, he was incarcerated for 12 years.
