(Minghui.org) A Hangzhou City resident was recently tried for legally suing former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for ordering the persecution of Falun Gong that resulted in her repeated incarcerations.
Ms. Sun Liping, formerly a medical worker at Qiaosi Prison, had twice been given jail time for refusing to renounce Falun Gong. She was first sentenced to five years in August 2002, and later to 3.5 years in July 2008. She filed a criminal complaint against Jiang in the second half of 2015, and was arrested months later on November 4, 2015.
Though the police released her on bail in late December last year, they continued to try to prosecute her for seeking justice against Jiang. They began to shadow her in June this year and finally seized her from her home on August 16, 2016.
Ms. Sun’s lawyer Xiong Dongmei received a phone call from the Xihu District Procuratorate on November 11, 2016, and was told that his client’s case had been forwarded to the local court. The caller said that the local 610 Office, an extra-legal agency tasked with eradicating Falun Gong and given power to override the judicial system, had ordered the Procuratorate and the court to put Ms. Sun on trial.
During the hearing on December 1, the lawyer argued against the prosecution evidence. He pointed out that Ms. Sun’s mother, who lives with her, was forced to sign some paperwork with unknown content when the police came to arrest Ms. Sun. The police also did not produce a list of confiscated items, as required by law.
The prosecutor claimed that Ms. Sun had mailed out and distributed materials containing information about Falun Gong on multiple occasions since June 2016, when she was tracked by police. He, however, failed to produce any of the evidence in court.
The lawyer defended Ms. Sun’s constitutional right to freedom of belief, as no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong. Judge Yang Chengfu scolded him for “getting involved in politics” and threatened to remove him from the courtroom.
Yang adjourned the hearing without issuing a verdict.
