Ms. Shen Jinyou Held in Brainwashing Centers for 31 Days

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Shen Jinyou was arrested and taken to brainwashing centers for filing legal complaints against Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese communist dictator, for initializing and maintaining the persecution of Falun Gong. She was detained for thirty-one days.

Ms. Shen was arrested at her home in Chenzhou City by more than 10 police officers on July 1, 2016. The police did not give any reason for arresting her or show any identification.

When she was taken to a brainwashing center located in the Wanhao Hotel, the officers finally said it was because of her lawsuit against Jiang.

“Practicing Falun Gong is not a crime,” said Ms. Shen. “Jiang broke the law by persecuting Falun Gong. By suing him, I am exercising my legal right that is promised by China's constitution.”

She was closely watched around the clock and forced to watch videos that slander Falun Gong. Police officers then tried to forced her to write statements renouncing Falun Gong and promising not to sue Jiang. She refused. They then threatened her younger sister, demanding that she write it for Ms. Shen, but she also refused.

Ms. Shen went on a hunger strike for five days to protest the illegal detention.

She was transferred to the Xiangquan Hotel on July 21 for further brainwashing sessions. Upon her refusal to write a statement renouncing Falun Gong, the police ordered her family to write it for her.

They threatened the family:, “We will stop your subsistence allowance and withhold your low-income housing if you do not write the guarantee statements for her.”

Unable to withstand the extreme pressure, Ms. Shen's sister wrote the guarantee statement. Several officers then held Ms. Shen's hand to sign it. Afterwards, she was released on August 1.

Four other Falun Gong practitioners were still being held in the brainwashing center when Ms. Shen was released. Authorities paid 100 yuan a day for people to watch them.

More than 10 Falun Gong practitioners from Chenzhou City have been sent to brainwashing centers since June 28, 2016, for filing criminal complaints against Jiang Zemin.
