(Minghui.org) Ms. Fang Shifeng has been detained for nearly eight months for distributing Falun Gong materials exposing the government's brutal persecution. Her family went to the police station on numerous occasions to ask for her release, but police officials verbally abused them and drove them away.
On April 24, 2015, Ms. Fang's husband, Mr. Huang Jinbiao, went to the Tongcheng County Police Department again at 9 a.m. Officer Li Chenggang beat him and called security guards to push him out the door.
Mr. Huang has been seriously ill for a long time and carries a urine collection bag with him. He fainted on the steps of the police department from the rough treatment. He was left lying on the ground unconscious for over an hour before someone in the station called an ambulance. His daughter was told to pay 1000 yuan for his emergency medical care.
No government department responded when Mr. Huang lodged a complaint about the incident. The police department denied beating him.
Ms. Fang lives in Tongcheng County, Hubei Province. She and another practitioner, Mr. Zheng Zixiang, were handing out Falun Gong brochures at night on September 24, 2014. Tanghu Police Station officers arrested them and held them at the local detention center.
Mr. Zheng, in his 70s, was released on October 24. After his release, the police continually harassed and threatened him. He had no choice but to leave home and move frequently to avoid further harassment.
Ms. Fang's case was rejected twice by the procuratorate on grounds of insufficient evidence. She should have been released unconditionally at that point.
Officials in the Tongcheng County Police Department then falsified evidence and re-submitted her case to the procuratorate, which, in turn, passed it on to the Tongcheng County Court.
The court initially scheduled a trial for April 3, 2015, but it was postponed with no explanation. On April 2, Tongcheng County Court officials made several phone calls to Ms. Fang's lawyer Mr. Chen, asking him to come to the judicial office.
At that meeting Mr. Chen was told that he could not submit a “not guilty” plea on behalf of his client.
