Hebei Man Facing Trial After Family Declined Repeated Extortion

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Song Zhenhai (宋振海) has been detained since his arrest on May 25, 2014. The local domestic security police took away over 10,000 yuan in cash from him on that day. They called it a fine, but refused to issue a receipt.

Mr. Song's family later paid another 2,000 yuan to domestic security chief Zhang Xuming (张绪明), under the promise of getting their confiscated family car back. However, Zhang didn't release the vehicle after receiving the money.

Zhang is now asking for an additional 10,000 yuan for Mr. Song's release. Upon the family's refusal, he vowed to bring charges against Mr. Song. The Linzhang Court has already accepted the case.

An illegal trial is in the works, according to sources. His family has hired lawyers from Beijing to defend him.

Mr. Song, a resident from Linzhang, Handan City, Hebei Province, was arrested in May for distributing Shen Yun DVDs in a local village. Shen Yun is a classical dance and music performance showcasing traditional Chinese culture.

Zhang turned down the family's request to visit several times and arrested Mr. Song's wife, Ms. Wang Qiufen (王秋芬), at the police department when she tried to inquire about her husband's whereabouts on June 6, 2014.

She was illegally detained for almost a month at the Handan City No. 1 Detention Center.

Mr. Song has been targeted by the local authorities for his belief since he resumed practicing Falun Gong in February 2011. Prior to the May arrest, he was detained in the Handan Forced Labor Camp between February 2012 and August 2013.
