Self-Employed Practitioner Detained More Than Four Months

(Minghui.org) The family of Ms. Fu Xiuyun, a Falun Gong practitioner from Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, visited the Qingchengshan Police Station in January 2014 to request her release, but couldn't see her before the Chinese New Year on January 31.

Police station personnel told the family that her case had been re-submitted to the local Procuratorate after being returned for lack of evidence in 2013, and stated that they would deal only with Ms. Fu's attorney, since the family had retained an attorney for her.

The local Procuratorate informed the attorney after the Chinese New Year holidays, however, that Ms. Fu's case was still at the police station. The attorney has now submitted the defense statement to the police station and Procuratorate.

Ms. Fu Xiuyun, who is self-employed, was arrested by the Qingchengshan Township police on October 18, 2013, and has been held in the Dujiangyan Detention Center for four months.

Arrested and Home Ransacked

A local police officer arrested Ms. Fu in October 2013 because he learned from a peddler that she had currency bills with Falun Gong messages written on them. The bills were used as the “evidence” against her.

When he learned of his mother's arrest, Ms. Fu's son, who lives in another city, quickly returned home. He found that the police had made a mess of the home. He was sad and worried, “My mother's last phone call was to my grandfather. She had bought some clothes for him to keep warm this winter. Mother was arrested before she could send them to him.”

Family Treated Rudely

When Ms. Fu's mother, husband, and sisters were treated rudely when they visited the Qingchengshan Police Station in Dujiangyan City in January. They asked the police, “Don't the police work for us citizens?” The police claimed, “We do work for most citizens, but not those who practice Falun Gong.”

One of Ms. Fu's relatives said, “There is no law that says Falun Gong is a cult. The 14 cults listed by the Ministry of Public Security don't include Falun Gong.” The police appeared to know nothing about the laws and could not say anything.

When the family asked the police to show which laws allowed the arrest of Falun Gong practitioners, the police ignored them. They claimed that the officer in charge of the case had left the station to attend a meeting, and refused to provide phone numbers of those in charge of the case.

Background and Past Persecution

Ms. Fu, 46, was weak and had many diseases before she began practicing Falun Gong in 1998. Within a month, her diseases all disappeared. With her new-found health and energy, she started a small business. She followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in her daily life, took good care of her family, and transacted business honestly. People who knew her were all surprised at how she had changed.

Ms. Fu was previously arrested in 2001 for hanging truth-clarifying banners. She protested her arrest with a hunger strike. The police inserted a tube as thick as a finger into her nose to force-feed her. She was sentenced to three years in prison.

During this time, her husband divorced her. Ms. Fu gave all their shared property to her husband. She was penniless when she was released. With hard work, she began to make her own living again. Through her son's efforts, she and her husband remarried. Just as the family was beginning to live a normal life, Ms. Fu was again arrested.
