(Minghui.org) Mr. Zheng Xiangxing, a Falun Gong practitioner from No.10 Farm, Tanghai County, Baoding City, Hebei Province, sustained a severe head injury while incarcerated in Baoding Prison. The prison had him undergo surgery without the consent of his family, and part of his brain was removed. Three attorneys representing Mr. Zheng's family met with the administration of Baoding Prison on the afternoon of February 20, 2013, and made the following demands:

“First, release Mr. Zheng Xiangxing on bail on medical grounds. Second, compensate him for the injuries he has sustained in prison. Third, investigate the cause of his head injury. Our attorneys will file a complaint against Baoding Prison on behalf of Mr. Zheng if we do not hear from you by noon tomorrow.”

At around 10 a.m. the next day, President of Baoding Prison Hospital Hou Yongjun and others visited Mrs. Zheng and her son at their hotel. They learned that the attorneys would leave Baoding at noon. At 1 p.m. they transferred Mr. Zheng to the prison hospital without notifying his family.

Mr. Zheng was sentenced to Baoding Prison for refusing to renounce Falun Gong. He sustained a severe head injury in prison on October 26, 2012. The prison claimed that it was an accident and that he fell on his head in the bathroom. They sent him to the Baoding First Central Hospital where he underwent surgery. According to the hospital, the CT scan showed that Mr. Zheng's skull was fractured on the left side and that there was hemorrhaging, but the surgeon removed parts of his skull on both sides. The surgeon said they removed part of the skull on the right to reduce the pressure. He also removed part of the left brain responsible for speech, vision, and memory. His family had doubts about the statement.

According to a reputable neurosurgeon, while it is necessary to check the side opposite the injury, the doctor can do it with a CT scan without having to open his skull. He does not believe the surgeon needed to open the right side of Mr. Zheng's skull to reduce internal pressure, since they had already opened the left side. The surgeon also informed Mr. Zheng's family that it was illegal to operate without a signed approval from his family and that the family was entitled to file a lawsuit for operating without their approval.

His family also questioned the cause of his injury, because the surveillance video showed that Mr. Zheng landed on his hips first and that he appeared to have been frail and weak, which suggested he might have already been subjected to physical abuse prior to the head injury.

More than 7,000 people have already signed a petition to have Mr. Zheng released and to bring the culprits to justice.
