(Minghui.org) Chenghai District Court in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, sentenced Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wang Qia on November 1, 2013, to three and a half years in prison for not giving up his belief.
Mr. Wang was first tried in the Chenghai District Court on September 11, 2013. Mr. Wang's attorney asked that some of the evidence against Mr. Wang be excluded. His request was denied, and court was adjourned. At the second trial on October 15, Mr. Wang's family hired two other lawyers to plead not-guilty on Mr. Wang's behalf.
During the second trial, the lawyers stated that the evidence obtained from Mr. Wang through torture during the interrogation was illegal. Lin Weimin and Li Dongming from the Domestic Security Division of Shantou Police Department tortured Mr. Wang when they interrogated him in the brainwashing center. The lawyers pointed out that the detention of Mr. Wang in the so-called “Legislative School” (which is, in fact, a brainwashing center dedicated to persecuting Falun Gong practitioners) was also illegal.
The lawyers demanded that Mr. Wang be released without any charges immediately. However, Cheng Yiqing, a prosecutor with the Chenghai District Procuratorate indicted Mr. Wang. Judges Zhuang Xu, Lin Huansheng, and Wang Fufen insisted on finishing the trial despite the objections of Mr. Wang's lawyers.
On November 1, Chenghai District Court sentenced Mr. Wang to three and a half years in prison. Mr. Wang and his family have appealed to the Shantou City Middle Court.
