House of Representatives

Dear Mr. Wu,

I would like to thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding the persecution of the Falun Gong in China. I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this matter.

The persecution of Falun Gong practitioners by the Chinese government must come to an end. I am pleased to inform you that Congress has debated H. Con. 218 a resolution expressing the sense of Congress that the Government of the People's Republic of China should stop all atrocities of Falun Gong practitioners.

H. Con. 218 would urge the Chinese government to release from detention all Falun Gong practitioners and put an immediate end to the practices of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment against them. It also states that Falun Gong practitioners should be allowed to pursue their religious beliefs in accordance with the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, and that how they are treated abides by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

I am pleased that on Nov. 18, 1999 this resolution was agreed to without objection. If in the future other legislation arises which you feel needs my attention please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you again for conveying your concerns on this important matter.

Sincerely,

(Signature)

Member of Congress
