(Clearwisdom.net) Cao Kai, male, 30 years old, was a Ph.D candidate in the Development Institute at the Chinese Academy of Science. On July 20, 1999, he was secretly taken away from his home to the Academy and illegally detained. Later he was put under surveillance for about a month and threatened by the police in an attempt to discover the source of Dafa materials. In September 1999, he was detained for 15 days for practicing the Falun Gong exercises in a public place. After his arrest Cao was then suspended from school. His employer, ignoring the fact that Cao's infant was suffering from severe heart disease, forcibly took back their apartment. As a result, Cao and his wife were homeless for a long period of time. Their baby endured many hardships because of this and died before reaching his first birthday. On October 28, 1999, after Cao went to the National People's Congress to appeal, he was detained for one month at the Haidian Detention Center. In December 1999, when the original members of the Falun Dafa Research Society were illegally tried, the authorities were afraid that he would be in the audience, so they detained him in the Zhongguancun Police Station on the day of the trial. In March 2000, the police from the Beijing Public Security Bureau broke into Cao's apartment and arrested him. He was detained for four days and released due to a lack of evidence. On May 12, 2000, the police again burst into Cao's apartment and arrested him. Cao's pregnant wife Zhang Wenfang blocked the way of the police vehicle and prevented him from being taken away. In June 2000, Cao was arrested by the police in Hainan. He was then detained in the Number 7 Detention Center and the Haidian Detention Center in Beijing for almost one hundred days. During those one hundred days, Cao went on a hunger strike to protest his illegal detainment. The staff at the Detention Center tortured Cao repeatedly and force-fed him by inserting a tube into his stomach through his nose. The guards then cruelly left the tube in his esophagus for a long period of time. Due to the long-term torture, Cao Kai was on the verge of death. At the end of September 2000, he was released by the Haidian Detention Center. In February 2001, Cao was again arrested by the police while sharing his views on cultivation in a fellow practitioner's house. At present nobody knows Cao's whereabouts. It is said that he is now being detained in Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp.

Qin Wei, male, 40 years old, was an art teacher at Bayi Middle School in Beijing. Soon after July 22, 1999, he was put on trial for practicing Falun Gong and being involved in Falun Gong activities. During the daytime, he was taken to the police station and interrogated about the source of the Falun Dafa materials. During the nighttime he was escorted back to his home to sleep. For a long period of time, the local police followed Qin Wei wherever he went and monitored his home telephone. On October 27, 1999, after he went to the National People's Congress to appeal, he was detained at the Haidian Detention Center for one month. On New Year's Eve 2000, he went to Tiananmen Square again to protest the persecution of Falun Gong, but he was viciously beaten and detained for 50 days. After his release in March 2000, he was again detained for one month after clarifying the truth about Falun Gong at the Military Museum, which was holding an exhibition that slandered Falun Dafa. At the end of June 2000, Qin heard that a Falun Dafa practitioner had been arrested when he was copying Falun Dafa materials, so he went to reason with the police but was arrested himself. After he was detained for one month, he was sentenced to Beijing's Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp for one year. At the labor camp, the police tried to force him to stop practicing Falun Gong. During the latter half of September 2000, the guards denied him sleep, beat him, and forced him to attend brainwashing classes. In addition, Qin was forced to make all kinds of products for the labor camp. During his detention Qin Wei was very firm in his cultivation. In June 2001, when he was due for release, his sentence was extended for six months. Currently, he is still being detained at the labor camp.

Wang Bin, male, 30 years old, was a Ph.D candidate of the Chemical Metallurgy Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Science. On July 21, 1999, he went to peacefully appeal for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong and was forcibly detained for 48 hours in Zhongguancun Police Station. The police asked Wang to promise that he would not appeal for Falun Gong anymore, but he firmly refused. On December 30, he was detained at Zhongguancun Police Station for two more days. In March 2000, he was taken from his dormitory and detained at Haidian Police Station for one day. In April 2000, he was forcibly detained by the Academy of Science for several days, during which he was isolated and brainwashed. At midnight of July 19, Wang was taken away by the police to Zhongguancun Police Station and detained for two days. Before his graduation, the institute threatened to withhold his degree unless he stopped practicing Falun Gong. However, all of these attempts were futile. In March 2001, he was arrested again and detained at Haidian Detention Center in Beijing.

Liu Mei, female, 40 years old, has a Master's degree and worked as a computer administrator in the library of a university in Beijing. In October 1999, Liu went to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong, and she was detained in Haidian Detention Center for one month. During Spring Festival of 2000, after she went to appeal, she was detained at the Number 14 Detention Center of Beijing for 15 days. On May 12, 2000, she was turned in and taken to the Haidian Detention Center, where she was detained for one month. Because Ms. Liu continued her cultivation, her employer only gave her a portion of her salary. Then in either July or August 2000, she was fired by her employer. In November 2000, Ms. Liu was again arrested in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, and her current whereabouts are unknown.

Li Xiaodong, male, 26 years old, was a graduate student of the Software Institute of the Chinese Academy of Science. In September 1999, after practicing the Falun Gong exercises publicly, he was detained for one month. Before the Spring Festival of 2000, he went to Tiananmen Square to unfurl a banner to appeal for a stop to the persecution. When Li was in the Tiananmen Police Substation, he tried to stop a policeman from beating other practitioners, and he was given a severe beating. His family was forced to pay 10,000 Yuan (Chinese currency, the monthly salary for an average Chinese urban worker is about 500 Yuan) to the police. Later Li was suspended from his studies by the Academy. Because of the hardships he went through, his mother was on the verge of a mental breakdown. In June 2000, the Party Secretary of his institute personally went to his home and asked him to stop practicing Falun Gong, or he would be unable to continue his study. But Li Xiaodong told the institute officials that he was determined to continue practicing Falun Dafa, and they let him continue with his studies. Before the Chinese National Day of 2000, he was detained by Zhongguancun Police Station for one day. In November, the Academy of Science forcibly sent him to a brainwashing class, but he was able to escape several days later. Then the institute officials used his family in order to trap him, but he resisted the illegal arrest with all of his strength and was severely injured in the process. The police then forced him to leave school and become homeless. In February 2001, he was arrested while sharing his views on cultivation at a fellow practitioner's home. He is currently being detained at Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp in Beijing.

Yang Jie, female, 38 years old, was a student at Zhejiang University. In December 1999, she publicly practiced the Falun Gong exercises at Zhejiang University and was detained for 15 days. Because she continued in her cultivation, the public security bureau in the Hangzhou region repeatedly went to her home and workplace to harass her. This caused her to lose one job after another. During the Spring Festival in January 2001, she was detained for about 20 days. At the end of 2001, she was unexpectedly taken away from her home and sentenced to two years at a forced labor camp. She was then sent to a forced labor camp in the Hangzhou region. Because she insisted on practicing Falun Gong and refused to be brainwashed, she is currently being detained and tortured in the "strict discipline group." It is said that her physical condition is very poor. Her family was forced to pay very high expenses, around 100 Yuan or more for each day. The persecution and torture of Falun Dafa practitioners in Zhejiang Province and the Hangzhou region have been escalating, and she is in a very dangerous situation.

Zhang Jiuhai, male, 31 years old, is a peasant from Pinggu County, Beijing. After July 22, 1999, he went to appeal for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong and has since been detained many times. Around October 2000, he was sentenced to one year at Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp in Beijing. One year later, the authorities extended his sentence for six months. Because he would not stop practicing Falun Gong, he was frequently beaten and denied sleep.

Luo Xiang, male, nearly 29, was a Ph.D candidate at Beijing University. Because he helped Falun Dafa practitioners in Beijing at the beginning of 2001, he was arrested and sent to a forced labor camp. Currently, he is still being detained in Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp.

Duan Peichen, male, 34, was arrested several times after appealing repeatedly for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong in Beijing. He was sent to Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp for one year in November 1999, and his sentence was extended for 6 months in November 2000. He was released in April 2001. During his detention, Duan was tortured and locked in a small cell. Because he refused to stop practicing Falun Gong, the police tortured him with electric batons and beat the soles of his feet with shoes.

Jing Baozhong, male, 33, was employed at the Second Institute of the Aviation Ministry. He was detained at seven different locations for attending a press conference at the end of October 1999. During the detention, he was tortured by being continually drenched with extremely cold water. He was also forced to take psychotropic drugs harmful to the nervous system, causing him to become mentally disabled. He was released in April 2000 and at the time had not recovered from the drugs.

Zhang Yong, male, 31, was a post-doctoral researcher from the chemical industry metallurgy department at the Chinese Academy of Science. He was forcefully detained for 48 hours by Zhongguancun Police Substation because he peacefully appealed in Beijing for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong. The police asked him not to take part in any more Falun Gong activities, but he refused. Administrators at the Chinese Academy of Science continuously asked him to stop his practice of Falun Gong, but he still refused to do so. He went to apply to be in the audience at a courthouse in Beijing, and as a result he was detained for one day on December 26, 1999. On December 29, 1999, a member of the National Security Department broke into his dormitory and confiscated much of his possessions. On April 13, 2000, he was detained for one month for holding up a large yellow banner at Tiananmen Square to appeal for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong. On July 19, 2000, the police arrested him and sent him to Zhongguancun Police Substation for two days. He was then sent to Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp for six months. During the detention, he was attacked by several guards at once many times, subjected to brainwashing, denied sleep, and forced to manufacture all kinds of products for the camp. In May 2001, the Chinese Academy of Science forced the chemical industry metallurgy department to send him to the brainwashing class. Zhang has since then abandoned his home to escape further persecution.

Yan Xiaohua, female, 30, a PH.D candidate in the zoology department of the Chinese Academy of Science, was forcefully detained at Zhongguancun Police Substation for 2 days for appearing in Beijing to peacefully appeal for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong. The police asked her mother to come into the police station to pressure her to give up practicing Falun Gong. Because she refused to do so, they forced her to write her thesis at home. She was arrested and sent to Tiananmen Square Police Substation for practicing the Falun Gong exercises at Tiananmen Square on October 18, 1999. She had her hands handcuffed behind her back for an hour because she refused to tell the police her workplace. She was then transferred to Haidian Prison and held there for one month. After releasing her, the Chinese Academy of Science dismissed her due to "illness," even though her medical records indicated that she was in perfect health. She was detained for one month in Beijing Dongcheng Police Station in March 2000 for appealing for Falun Gong to the National People's Congress. During the detention, the guard tortured her by kicking her, beating her, smashing her head against the wall, and hanging her with her feet off the ground for about an hour. After her release, she was detained by the Xinjiang office in Beijing, since Xinjiang was her hometown. On May 12, 2000, she was turned in and detained in Haidian Detention Center for 9 days. She started a hunger strike and was forced fed through her nose many times. The guards also instructed the inmates to beat her until she spat out blood. They also punished the prisoners in the same cell as long as she stayed on the hunger strike. After this, she abandoned her home to avoid further persecution. The police have since then harassed and intimidated her family, and broken into her house many times.

Gong Kun, male, around 30, was a Ph.D candidate in the mathematics department at the Chinese Academy of Science. Because he insisted on practicing Falun Gong, he was detained many times by Zhongguancun Police Station. He was forced to suspend his studies indefinitely. The Academy continuously pressured his elderly parents to take him home from Beijing. The authorities tried to deceive him into going to a brainwashing class but failed. He was arrested and detained for nearly two months in February 2001 for setting up a loudspeaker to clarify the truth in Nanchang City, Hunan Province. He has abandoned his home to avoid further persecution.

Zhang Wenfang, female, 30, was a researcher at Ziguang Company of Tsinghua University. She was a key employee and had developed a patent for the company. Because she insisted on practicing Falun Gong in public, she was detained by Zhongguancun Police Station and the Beijing City Police Station. She had just given birth at the time, and her baby died soon after. On October 28, 1999, she was detained for one month for peacefully appealing for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong. Her company then fired her, and her family found it very hard to make ends meet. During the next two years she was forced to move constantly because the police continually harassed her even while she was pregnant. They also intimidated practitioners who offered her help with threatening phone calls.

Liu Jiang, male, 27, is a graduate of the zoology department of the Chinese Academy of Science. He was admitted for the doctoral program from the zoology department after receiving his masters degree. But in August 1999, the zoology department did not accept him into the program because he refused to stop practicing Falun Gong. After losing his chance at a Ph.D., Liu went to work in Shanghai. During this time, he was detained, and the police ordered his family to take him away from Shanghai. His current status is unknown.

Hong Wei, male, 26, was a graduate student at the microbiology department of the Chinese Academy of Science. In September 1999, he was detained for practicing Falun Gong exercises publicly at Zhongguancun. He was forced to suspend his studies in 2000. He has abandoned his home to avoid further persecution.

Li Zhanjin, female, nearly 52, retired, was a former senior engineer at Qingniao Corporation of Beijing University. Just before July 22, 2000, the local police detained her, as they were afraid that she would appeal for Falun Gong in Beijing. Before the Chinese New Year in 2001, she was detained again for going to another practitioner's home. She was forced to attend a brainwashing class for a month in April 2001. To avoid further persecution, she has abandoned her home.

Ma Ang, male, 30 years old, has a master degree from Beijing University. In October 1999, he was detained for reading a Falun Gong book at Tiananmen Square. He was then fired by his employer. He has abandoned his home to avoid further persecution.
