Amnesty Calls China's Jiang a Rights "Scoundrel" [Excerpt]

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Amnesty International on Wednesday named Chinese President Jiang Zemin as one of its human rights "scoundrels" of 2000 in a condemnation of China' rights record that the group said did not appear to be improving with expanding trade ties.

OTTAWA, May 31 - Today, a Canada-wide campaign to free Ms. Ying Zhu and Mr. Shenli Lin was launched by a "cross-party coalition of MPs," Amnesty International of Canada and Falun Gong practitioners.

OTTAWA (May 31, 2001)- Members of Parliament Irwin Cotler, Scott Reid, Francine Lalonde, Libby Davies, and Bill Casey joined together today in calling for the release of Ying Zhu, a Canadian landed immigrant who was arrested in China two weeks ago for being a practitioner of Falun Gong.
