(Minghui.org) Ms. Yuan Hongying spent her 70th birthday (February 6, 2025) in police custody because she practices Falun Gong. The day before she was arrested at a train station in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province while waiting to board a train to Fuyu County in the same province where she lives.
From about 2 p.m. on February 5 to about 3 a.m. the next morning, Ms Yuan was interrogated 4 to 5 times. She was not allowed to sleep the entire night. She experienced dizziness and headaches as a result.
After the interrogation, the police measured Ms. Yuan’s blood pressure and the systolic pressure read 180 mmHg (when a normal range is 120 or lower). Yet they still took her to the Harbin City Second Detention Center for criminal detention. Her blood pressure remained high and the skin on her ankles festered. She also needed help getting up after using the restroom.
The Harbin City Railway Transportation Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for Ms. Yuan on March 13, 2025. She was sentenced to three years in prison in mid-July 2025 by the Harbin City Railway Transportation Court. Details of her indictment, trial, and sentencing remain unknown.
This is not the first time that Ms. Yuan has been targeted for her faith, which she started to practice in 1996 and credits for helping her to recover from her heart condition, asthma, and cholecystitis. Because she refused to give up Falun Gong after the persecution started in 1999, she was repeatedly arrested and detained.
Ms. Yuan was arrested in 2001 and detained for 40 days. She was arrested again in 2003. The police beat her and gave her a two-year term at the Shuanghe Forced Labor Camp. She was forced to work for 16 hours a day without pay and she was also subjected to intensive brainwashing.
Ms. Yuan went to Shanghai to help care for her grandson in 2012 and was arrested on May 9, 2012. She was sentenced to three and a half years by the Hongkou District Court on November 19, 2012. She was tortured in Songjiang Women’s Prison so badly that she had to be hospitalized.
In 2021, the authorities suspended Ms. Yuan’s pension. She was arrested again on May 6, 2023 and released on bail after paying a fine.
