(Minghui.org) Two Maoming City, Guangdong Province, residents were denied family visits after they were arrested in September 2024 for practicing Falun Gong.

Ms. Liang Qiuyuan, 79, and Ms. Cui Wei’e, 66, were arrested separately. Ms. Liang was seized by officers from the Poxin Town Police Station and the Dianbai District Domestic Security Division on September 13, 2024. Ms. Cui was also arrested in September 2024 but the exact date is not known.

Both women are currently held at the Maoming City First Lockup. Their families have been denied visits for the past six months. Their families were told to pay the lockup 500 yuan each month to pay for the two women’s food.

Ms. Liang and Ms. Cui both suffered repeated persecution in the past for upholding their faith. Ms. Liang served two years of forced labor and Ms. Cui was given a two-year prison term.

Past Persecution of Ms. Liang

Ms. Liang, born on September 20, 1945, took up Falun Gong in July 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party began to persecute the ancient mind-body practice. Knowing the brutality of the regime after witnessing the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, she became curious about Falun Gong when the communist regime fiercely spread hateful propaganda about it. She read Falun Gong’s main book, Zhuan Falun, and identified with the principles discussed in the book. By following Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance in her daily life, she became a calmer person and learned to be more forgiving and caring. Meanwhile, her many ailments, including gynecological diseases, hemiplegia, and insomnia, also disappeared.

Officers Wang Yi and Cen Fengzhen from the Poxin Town Police Station broke into Ms. Liang’s home on February 23, 2000, and arrested her. They held her at the Poxin Town Drug Rehabilitation Center for one month and three days. After another arrest in May 2000, Ms. Liang was held at the Dianbai District Second Detention Center for five days, during which time she was forced to do hard labor. Her third arrest in 2000 took place on October 1. She was held in the same detention center for 32 days and again forced to do hard labor. She had to pay 75 yuan before her release.

More than a dozen people from the Poxin Town Government and Poxin Town Police Station descended on Ms. Liang’s home at 10:30 p.m. on January 23, 2001. Her grandson and his mother were so terrified that they both cried loudly. Ms. Liang was again taken to the Dianbai District Second Detention Center. She was held there for more than six months and was ordered to do hard labor for up to 17 hours a day every day. The food given was moldy vegetables. Her health was severely damaged due to hard labor and poor food. She had back pain, her buttocks festered, and she could not walk. Only then was she released.

The Poxin Town Police Station officers took Ms. Liang to the Dianbai District Second Detention Center in late April 2002. She held firm to her faith and was ordered to sleep in the restroom, often being stomped on by inmates who came to use the restroom.

In July 2002, Ms. Liang was transferred to the Maoming City Brainwashing Center by chief Dai Tingfeng and Wang Ri (head of the local 610 Office). She refused to watch videos slandering Falun Gong and was brutally tortured. The guards there slapped her in the face, poked her in the eyes, yanked her hair, and didn’t let her sleep. She wasn’t released until her family paid 1,800 yuan in September 2002.

Ms. Liang was arrested again two months later, on November 13, 2004 and soon given two years of forced labor. The guards at the Sanshui Labor Camp confiscated the 350 yuan cash she had on her during the admission process. They didn’t issue her a receipt or return the funds. For a whole year, she didn’t have money to purchase daily necessities. Her son went to the labor camp in July 2005 and was denied visits because she did not renounce Falun Gong.

Ms. Liang was forced to do hard labor for up to 18 hours a day. She was not allowed to eat or sleep whenever she failed to finish her quota. She also had to squat on her tiptoes as part of the punishment.

During a police sweep on November 2, 2013, Ms. Liang was arrested and taken to the Maoming City Brainwashing Center and held there for an unknown amount of time. Her next arrest was on June 15, 2016, when her home raided and she was detained for one day.

More than ten agents broke into her home on January 5, 2017 and raided her home. They confiscated more than 30 Falun Gong books, over 300 yuan in cash and other items. No list of confiscated items was issued.

Past Persecution of Ms. Cui

After Ms. Cui began practicing Falun Gong in August 1998 her bad temper was gone. She also returned the money she owed others for decades. After the persecution began in July 1999, she held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted. She was first arrested soon after the persecution began and she was detained at the Dianbai District Second Detention Center for 18 days. Her next arrest in 1999 took place while she was on a train to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. She was taken to a police station in Hunan Province. Officer Zhu Dewen from the Lintou Town Police Station picked her up and held her at the Dianbai District Second Detention Center for 15 days.

After she was arrested in March 2001, Ms. Cui was taken to the Dianbai District Second Detention Center. One year later, she was moved to the Maoming City Brainwashing Center, where she was held for another fifteen months. She was kicked and punched at the brainwashing center. The guards once kept her hands cuffed for more than seven months in a row.

Ms. Cui was arrested again on August 15, 2016, while putting up self-adhesive stickers which had Falun Gong messages. She was taken to the Dianbai District First Detention Center. The Dianbai District Court sentenced her to two years in early December 2016 and she was admitted to the Guangdong Province Women’s Prison.
