A 71-year-old woman in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, died on December 24, 2023, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.

Two days after the persecution began on July 20, 1999, Ms. Long Huaxian went to the Kunming City Appeals Office to seek justice for Falun Gong. She was arrested and detained for several hours. She appealed to the Yunnan Province Appeals Bureau on April 4, 2000, only to be arrested again. After one night in the Dongzhou Police Station, she was taken to the Panlong District First Detention Center. Forty days later, she was given three years of forced labor.

The Yunnan Province Women’s Forced Labor Camp released Ms. Long one year later and allowed her to serve the remainder of the term at home.

Ms. Long started a convenience store after she was released from the labor camp in 2002. On April 22, 2008, Ms. Long’s daughter Ms. Zhou Jin was arrested at the convenience store and taken to the Guandu District Detention Center that night.

Shuguang Police Station officers shut down the convenience store and raided Ms. Long and Ms. Zhou’s respective homes. To avoid being arrested, Ms. Long went into hiding and her elderly mother, who lived with her, was left to fend for herself.

Ms. Zhou was forced to do hard labor every day and stand on duty for two to three hours every night. The detention center guards once held her in solitary confinement for 15 days, during which they forced her to wear heavy shackles every day. She had to eat and relieve herself in the cell. Only 28 at the time, she was so abused that she became mentally disordered.

Her mother Ms. Long was seized on June 2, 2008, and tried by the Kunming City Intermediate Court in December 2008. Ms. Zhou stood trial in the same court on November 7, 2008.

Ms. Long was sentenced to three years on January 19, 2009, and her daughter was given the same sentence in February 2009. Both mother and daughter were taken to the Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison. They were forced to sit on small stools for long hours and also watch vidoes that slandered Falun Gong.

The police kept Ms. Long under close surveillance after she was released on June 1, 2011. Eight officers, including Shi Ruilin, broke into Ms. Long’s home on February 9, 2018, and confiscated her Falun Gong books, two computers, three printers, two MP3 players, four music recorders, and a paper cutter.

The relentless persecution eventually claimed Ms. Long’s life on December 24, 2023.
