A woman in her 60s died six months after serving a four-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Ms. Zhang Xiaohong, of Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province, was arrested at home on August 14, 2019 by officers from the Yujiang Police Station in Yingtan City of the same province. While held at the Yingtan City Detention Center, she had a stroke and lost some function in the left side of the body. She was taken to the detention center affiliated hospital.
Ms. Zhang stood trial in June 2020 and was sentenced to four years. She was taken to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison, where her condition declined further and she became completely paralyzed on the left side of her body.
By the time Ms. Zhang was released in August 2023, she was incontinent and unable to walk on her own; most of her teeth had fallen out. She died around 2 a.m. on March 8, 2024.
The Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison was established in 1958, built from the old Nanchang City Chemical Fiber Factory. The prison has about 400 guards. At least 225 Falun Gong practitioners have been held here at one point or another in the past 26 years, with 34 practitioners imprisoned here more than once.
In order to force practitioners to renounce Falun Gong, the guards often instigated drug dealers or death-row inmates on reprieve to torture them, incentivized by term reductions.
