(Minghui.org) Ms. Yuan Jingxiu’s family received a call from her following her arrest on June 26, 2023. She described being held in a dark room, but she had no idea where it was. Her loved ones have not heard from since then or received any official updates of her case status. They recently learned from an insider that she was admitted to the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison around May 2024 to serve a five-year term.
Ms. Yuan, a 55-year-old electrical design engineer by training, was targeted because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. Prior to her latest secret prison sentence, the Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province, resident served two terms at the notorious Masanjia Forced Labor Camp and was fired by the Liaoyang Electric Power Survey and Design Institute. She later landed a job at the Zhongding Electric Power Engineering Design Company, only to be arrested at work on June 26, 2023 and secretly sentenced.
Tortured in Prison
According to the insider, Ms. Yuan is currently held in Team Five of Division One at the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison. She refused to renounce Falun Gong, and the guards arranged several inmates to watch her around the clock. The monitors bombarded her with propaganda smearing Falun Gong every night. They also poured water on her pillow and comforter, or hid her bedding in a bin in the restroom so she did not have anything to cover herself with when she slept.
The monitors sometimes did not give her any toilet paper to use and also forbade others from sharing theirs with her. Those who tried to help her were punished.
For a period of time, the guards forced Ms. Yuan to squat in the workshop for about twelve or thirteen hours a day. When she returned to the cell, she had to squat again and was not allowed to wash herself. She was only given a small mouthful of rice at each meal, with no vegetables or meat.
Ms. Yuan refused to renounce her faith despite the abuse. In July 2024, a section chief surnamed Ren in Division One told the head inmate in Team Five that if Ms. Yuan still refused to sign statements to renounce Falun Gong, all the inmates in the team would be barred from purchasing daily necessities in August.
The inmates went ballistic upon hearing they could be implicated. On July 14, 2024, several of them took turns beating Ms. Yuan and verbally abusing her. One inmate hit her on the head with a heavy, thick dictionary. Another kicked and punched her, and slapped her face. A newly admitted murderer threatened to do whatever it took to make her submit. The murderer said she was not afraid of any consequence since she was already on death row.
Guard Zhan Weihua saw the commotion through the surveillance camera and summoned one of the inmates to his office. The inmate kept beating Ms. Yuan after she returned to the cell. When she became exhausted, the other inmates took over assaulting Ms. Yuan.
What happened to Ms. Yuan was not an isolated case. The guards also used the same tactic to instigate the inmates’ hatred towards other jailed Falun Gong practitioners, including Ms. Ai Yanjing and Ms. Deng Xiaoling. By threatening to punish the inmates as well, the guards successfully turned them into willing hitmen to abuse the practitioners.
