A 63-year-old resident of Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, died on December 27, 2024, four years after he was released from prison in a serious medical condition.
Mr. Jin Yuan was arrested on November 10, 2010, for his faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. He was sentenced to eight and a half years on June 24, 2011, but his term was later extended by 11 months with him released in early April 2020.
Before his prison transfer, Mr. Jin was already abused at a local detention center to the point of developing a serious medical condition. At one point he remained unconscious for two days. Nonetheless, the court still ordered his transfer to the Yangjiang Prison after his conviction. Despite his condition, the prison guards continued to abuse him, including with beatings, sleep deprivation, long hours of forced labor, and involuntary drug administration. He became critically ill at one point but remained jailed.
Fu Shaojie and Hou, two agents of the 610 Office in residence in the prison, were the mastermind behind Mr. Jin’s and other practitioners’ torture. The duo used sentence commutation as an incentive to instigate death row inmates to inflict harm on the practitioners. Fu and Hou also once told the guards not to hesitate in torturing the practitioners. In their words, “If a few practitioners die in prison, it’d be like killing a few ants.”
Mr. Jin’s whole body gradually festered and oozed out a yellow liquid. He became almost unrecognizable. His condition kept worsening after he was released in early April 2020 and he died on December 27, 2024.
Before his latest prison sentence, Mr. Jin served a three-year forced labor term between 2001 and 2003. He was also beaten and forced to do hard labor. After a torture session, his eardrum ruptured and he lost his hearing. Fortunately, he gradually regained hearing after he was released, only to be arrested again in 2010 and given a lengthy prison term.
Mr. Jin was a musician with the Anhui Province Song and Dance Troupe and once won the second prize winner of the National Youth Erhu Music Competition. He later moved to Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, where he took up Falun Gong in 1998.
