Hubei Police: “We Don’t Need Legal Basis to Harass You”

(Minghui.org) While harassing a married couple in Suizhou City, Hubei Province for their faith in Falun Gong, the police slandered this ancient spiritual and meditation discipline and claimed that they didn’t need any legal basis for the persecution.

Ms. Jiang Hongyan received a call from Tong Chunlin, the village women’s federation director, on February 21, 2023, who asked her whether she was home. Shortly after the call, Tong led four people, including her assistant, two police officers, and one township government official, to Ms. Jiang’s home.

A tall police officer said he was from the Wanhe Police Station and that his last name was Chen. He added that Ms. Jiang didn’t have the right to ask for his personal information. Ms. Jiang later confirmed that his name was Chen Bingyang.

The other police officer and the government official said they shared the same last name of Wang, but without giving further information about themselves.

Officer Chen asked Ms. Jiang and her husband, Mr. Liu Hongpin, whether they had any Falun Gong materials at home. He slandered Falun Gong and claimed that several Falun Gong practitioners set themselves on fire at Tiananmen Square on January 23, 2001, and that Falun Gong was not welcome anywhere.

Mr. Liu clarified that the Tiananmen Square self-immolation incident was a hoax manufactured by the communist regime to demonize Falun Gong, and that none of the self-immolators had ever practiced Falun Gong. He added that Falun Gong has spread all over the world and is celebrated by people from all walks of life. It’s only persecuted in its home country, China.

Chen continued to defame Falun Gong and emphasized that since they live in China, they must follow the Chinese Communist Party.

Mr. Liu questioned Chen, “What’s the legal basis for you to come to my home?”

“What legal basis? We don’t need any legal basis!” Chen blurted out.

After the police left, the couple asked Tong the reason for the police harassment. Tong responded that the police only asked her to take them to find the couple. They were her superiors and there was no way for them to tell her anything else or for her to defy their order.

A village official named Dai Fu called Mr. Liu the next morning and asked to visit him. Mr. Liu said that if Dai came to visit as a friend, he would definitely be welcome, but if he came to harass him, then he didn’t want to see him.

Dai claimed that it was an order from the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, as he had been assigned to monitor the couple’s daily activities. It’s not clear whether Dai harassed the couple or not that day.

In addition to the latest harassment, the police had also harassed Ms. Jiang twice last September.

An officer surnamed Xu called Ms. Jiang in late August and on September 7, 2022 several times, demanding to visit her. Not wanting the police to come to her home, Ms. Jiang went to the police station, urging the police not to participate in the persecution. Xu said to her, “I don’t want to talk about this with you. If you think it’s good, you can practice it at home. But you can’t promote it outside.”

Village officials Wang Jinkui and Yang Chenglong harassed Ms. Jiang again on September 28, 2022 and asked for Mr. Liu’s phone number. They also asked her which college her child was attending.

When Ms. Jiang asked who wanted to know such information, the village officials said it was ordered by the police chief, Liu. They threatened that they had ways to find out the information even if she didn’t tell them. Ms. Jiang tried to clarify the facts about Falun Gong to them, but they refused to listen.
