Four Arrested in One Day for Practicing Falun Gong – Two Sentenced, One Facing Trial, and Another Released

(Minghui.org) Among the four Huludao City, Liaoning Province residents arrested on August 19, 2022 for practicing Falun Gong, Mr. Liu Quanwang and Ms. Cui Bing have been sentenced to five and two years, respectively.

Judge Zhang Liang of Lianshan District Court refused to provide a copy of the verdicts to the practitioners’ families, who had to ask around in order to find out the lengths of their terms.

Both Mr. Liu and Ms. Cui’s appeals reached the Huludao City Intermediate Court on February 9, 2023. Judge Zhu Dan was assigned to handle Mr. Liu’s case and judge Liu Danhong will oversee Ms. Cui’s case.

When Ms. Cui’s husband went to the intermediate court to submit materials about her case, judge Liu’s assistant refused to accept it, after seeing a complaint against the trial court judge in it.

The other two practitioners arrested are a married couple. Ms. Dong Yanhong was released on January 4, 2023, after the Lianshan District Procuratorate dismissed her case due to insufficient evidence. But her husband Mr. Zhang Aimin was indicted by the Lianshan District Procuratorate and judge Zhang, who had sentenced Mr. Liu and Ms. Cui, was assigned to handle his case.

Past Persecution of Mr. Liu

Mr. Liu, 59, was born to a poor family in Jianping County, Liaoning Province. To make a living, he began to work at a coal mine in Huludao City at a young age. Due to the poor working environment, he developed silicosis, a stomach condition, a heart problem, and rheumatoid arthritis in his 30s.

Three months after he began to practice Falun Gong in 1996, all of his symptoms disappeared. He quit smoking, drinking, and playing mahjong. He also became a volunteer coordinator at a local practice site.

There was a minor cave-in at the coal mine one day when a 40-person inspection team was inside. Mr. Liu stood against the area that was caving in until the entire team managed to get out. He then escaped and the mine collapsed right afterward.

Another time, a tunnel in the mine was blocked and the site had to be blasted open. No one at the mine was willing to take the job, as it was too dangerous. When Mr. Liu’s manager asked if he’d like to do it, he agreed with no hesitation. He worked for 24 hours and solved the problem. But his manager never kept his promise to raise his pay.

Mr. Liu later found another job operating a crane at a kiln. He accidentally fell into the pit and was severely burned. He did the Falun Gong exercises and the pain was gone on the fourth day.

After the Chinese Communist Party launched the persecution in 1999, Mr. Liu was repeatedly targeted for his faith. He served three labor camp terms and a prison term, for a total of 11 years. During his incarceration, the labor camp and prison guards used all kinds of methods to torture him, including beatings, force-feedings, electric shocks, and sleep deprivation.
