Anhui Woman Dies Two Days After Husband Stands Trial for Their Shared Faith in Falun Gong

When Mr. Huang Zhisong was tried on February 24, 2023 for practicing Falun Gong, his wife, Ms. Chen Lingxia, was too weak to attend the trial as she had become ill due to mental distress from seeking justice for him. She suddenly died two days later, at the age of 55.

The couple’s two daughters, who are currently residing outside of China, couldn’t come home to attend her funeral, also because of the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese communist regime which started in July 1999.

Mr. Huang and Ms. Chen, of Anqing City, Anhui Province, were arrested at home on June 17, 2022. Another Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Jiang Xiagen, was also arrested at the same time. While both men remained in custody in the Anqing City Detention Center, Ms. Chen was later released.

Ms. Chen was devastated by Mr. Huang’s continued detention. She frequented the local police station and Procuratorate to seek his release. The lawyer she hired for Mr. Huang entered a not guilty plea for him during his and Mr. Jiang’s joint hearing at the Taihu County Court on February 24, 2023.

Ms. Chen wasn’t able to attend the hearing because the mental and physical distress had taken a toll on her health. She passed away two days later, without seeing Mr. Huang for the last time.

The presiding judge said he would announce Mr. Huang and Mr. Jiang’s verdicts on April 6.
