Elderly Woman Still Detained After Developing Abdominal Tumor

(Minghui.org) A 79-year-old woman is still held at the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison, more than six months after she was found to have a large tumor in her abdomen. Her family is calling for the prison to release her for immediate medical attention.

Ms. Sun Yanzhi, of Fushun City, Liaoning Province, is serving a five-year term for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Sun was arrested on January 9, 2020. Although she was released that night, the police returned on February 4 to search her home. They attempted to confiscate her Falun Gong books but relented when she protested. The officers took her Falun Gong magazines instead.

Ms. Sun was summoned to the police station on June 10. She urged the officers not to follow the communist regime in persecuting Falun Gong. The police refused to listen and submitted her case to the procuratorate. Her court date was scheduled for October 20, 2020, but she refused to show up and lived away from home to avoid police harassment.

She returned home months later. While she was waiting for a bus on May 12, 2021, a car with no license plate stopped in front of her, and five police officers jumped out and arrested her. She was taken to the Nangou Detention Center and has been held there since.

Judge Tian Hao later secretly sentenced Ms. Sun to five years. She was taken to the Liaoning Women’s Prison in late 2021 and held at the 12th ward, the “Correction Center” specifically used to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. Around the same time, she was found to have a tumor in her abdomen measuring nearly 3.9 by 4.3 inches.

Ms. Sun’s imprisonment dealt her husband a heavy blow. He said that she used to suffer very poor health, but fully recovered after practicing Falun Gong. The family is grateful for the practice for saving them tremendous medical cost. He is saddened that Ms. Sun has to serve time for her faith in her senior years. He often shed tears when thinking about her.
