(Minghui.org) Greetings esteemed Master, and fellow Falun Dafa practitioners!
I reside in a city about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Buenos Aires. I am a psychologist. My job is to ease people’s mental sufferings. I have noticed, however, given my psychiatrist practice, that the reason for various suffering is actually fear. As I cultivate based on Falun Dafa principles “Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance,” I understand that people suffer as long as we have human bodies, and that human notions (karma) are the root cause of these sufferings.
Master told us,
“Ordinary people, you know, one day they just come down with something, or out of the blue they have problems, and there’s even a chance one day they’ll just develop psychosis or maybe even kick the bucket. An ordinary person’s life is just like that.” (The Sixth Talk, Zhuan Falun)
A fellow practitioner once told me that his understanding was that people lacked righteous values if they didn’t have any righteous belief, and that they would be lost without help from superior beings. He said that people felt empty and miserable when they didn’t have money, love, or fame, and that they weren’t content with what they had.
His words reminded me of what Master said,
“And ‘Law’s End’ doesn’t just have to do with the end of Law in Buddhism—it’s about how the world goes when it doesn’t have the restraint of the Law in people’s hearts to sustain morality.” (The Third Talk, Zhuan Falun)
When I counsel my patients, I always try my best to share my understanding of the Fa. Good ideas teem in my mind when I talk from the perspective of the Fa.
My patients are surprised to hear my understanding of the Dafa principles. They are immediately relieved from their struggles upon hearing what I tell them, and always appreciate it. I can tell that they never forget those words, because they keep mentioning them in our later conversations.
The way I work has changed radically since I started practicing Falun Dafa. I would like to share an experience I had at work.
Dealing With Unspeakable Fear
One of my patients told me that she felt an unspeakable fear. She was often afraid because she had premonitions, and what she had seen in her dreams had often become true. At first I worked on her fear in a conventional way.
She displayed good logic, but something blocked her from relieving her pain and fear. Her celestial eye was obviously open, and what she saw made her afraid and confused. She also said that she didn’t pursue material benefits like an ordinary person, as it was pitiful to do that. What she said sounded familiar. When she said the words “ordinary person,” I clearly knew that the way I was trying to help her so far wouldn’t work, and that I had to speak from the perspective of the Fa.
She told me later about a beautiful and vivid dream she had, but the dream had a dark side. In her dream, some water transformed into colorful mountains, and everything was very gorgeous. She and a friend walked in the water and toured the colorful mountains. They entered a mountain from one side and left from the other side. They also saw a wonderful performance like the Eastern ballet. The dancers, dressed in blue, yellow, and orange costumes, gave an amazing performance, but she noticed that some people in black color abused these dancers. The story in the performance mentioned a book, which explained what had happened and why. She wanted to get the book, but she couldn’t, because she didn’t have enough money. She felt agony in her heart.
I immediately knew the answer to her dream. I asked her what color the book was. She said it was either blue or light blue. I told her, “You should read Zhuan Falun. The dance group you saw in your dream is Shen Yun. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is persecuting them based on their belief. The book answers all your questions about life and is all you have been looking for. It’s free to read the book online, but if you would like to get a printed copy, I can contact the association to get a copy for you.”
The agony on her face changed to a big surprise. She was so thrilled and relieved that she burst into tears. “I can’t believe you told me this...” Her words were broken between sobbing. “Yes, I want the book! I want to read it!”
I showed her the picture of the book and sent her the links to the book and to the Shen Yun website. She was so grateful for all the information. She said the book was beautiful, just like what she had seen in her dream. She looked forward to watching Shen Yun when it tours Argentina.
I’m deeply touched by the greatness of Dafa and Master’s compassion. I never thought I would become part of this supernatural experience, much less experience it at work. It seemed so far away, but the marvelous things happened before my eyes.
Viewing the Psychologist Profession from the Perspective of the Fa
After discussions with my fellow practitioners, I think psychology contradicts what we have learned from cultivation. That’s why I have asked myself many times if I should continue working as a psychologist. I even looked for other types of jobs.
I shared my thoughts with my local fellow practitioners. One of them asked me a thought-provoking question, if changing my job would allow me to have plenty of time to do Dafa things well. I thought her concern was helpful, and I stopped looking for other jobs unrelated to psychology. The process allowed me to see and let go of my attachment to job preferences.
I looked within and reflected upon whether it was right to tell ordinary people about the super-normal power of Falun Dafa. I think there is no problem as long as I speak rationally based on the principles of the Fa.
Master told us,
“And for you cultivators, precisely because of the delusion that is here in human society, being in this environment allows you to cultivate.” (Teachings at the 2004 International Conference in New York)
As long as Master says something is okay, you can just go ahead and follow ordinary people’s way of doing it, because you are meant to walk your path in that way, and human beings are meant to be saved in that way.” (Teachings at the 2004 International Conference in New York)
“Many students understand only that doing the exercises and studying the Fa are cultivation. Yes, with those you directly engage the Fa. But as you go about truly cultivating yourself in your day-to-day life, the society that you come into contact with is your cultivation environment. The work and family environments that you spend time in are both settings in which you are to cultivate yourselves, are part of the path you must walk, are what you must handle, and handle correctly at that. None of these should be glossed over.” (“Fa Teaching Given at the 2006 Conference in Canada,” Collected Teachings Given Around the World, Volume VII)
I learned from Master’s teaching that the key is to keep our hearts righteous no matter what we do. It will enable us to think, talk, and work as cultivators. Master has made it clear that we should cultivate ourselves in all settings.
I think I should do my job well as a psychologist. I have clarified the truth about Dafa to others in my graduate school and to my colleagues at work. They appreciated me for telling them about Falun Dafa. Some didn’t want to hear it, but I learned to pay attention to two things. First, I should improve my xinxing. Second, I should inspire their Buddha nature.
Master once said,
“If what you say truly comes from your kindness and is without any personal agenda, your words will really touch others.” (Teachings at the Conference in Singapore)
I know that many other psychologists believe in spirituality. They strive to find answers they can’t find in their research theories, and are waiting for the correct path.
Cultivating Speech
I noticed that things go smoothly when I follow the requirements of the Fa. Otherwise, things aren’t smooth or have undesirable consequences. I have learned terrible lessons from a time I failed to cultivate speech.
A patient once canceled her appointment for no reason a week before. She told me in the following appointment that she wouldn’t come again because she wasn’t comfortable with what I had said. She said that my hurtful words had bothered her for days. I was ashamed to have said hurtful words despite being a cultivator.
Master taught us,
“When we open our mouths to speak we should speak in line with a practitioner’s character, we don’t gossip, and we don’t say negative things. You’re a cultivator, so to decide whether or not you should say something you should see how you measure up to the standards of the Law.” (The Eighth Talk, Zhuan Falun)
I was deeply sorry for not having done well and for having no opportunity to make it up. Time won’t wait. Opportunities won’t come back. I realized that I have hurt several other people, including a fellow practitioner. I see what I have done wrong, but I may not have a chance to recover the loss every time.
When I found other people being wrong, my way of expression turned to an undisguised sarcasm, and sometimes a cruel ridicule. The worst thing is that I did it without even noticing. I thought my observations were sharp, but I never thought about what effects they would bring to others. I only cared about logic and accuracy. I thought I was competent and outstanding, but I was typically impatient with people who don’t make sense.
I should think twice to evaluate what I should say and how to say it. Before I point out other people’s shortcomings, I should look within to see if I have any problem myself. I should put others in front of myself in every action, including trivial things. I know that the only way to accomplish this is to study the Fa well and focus on my own cultivation.
I know that it doesn’t matter what happens because it’s for me to improve, and my whole life has been arranged in detail by Master. Even before I knew Dafa, Master had been with me, protecting me, so that I could become one of the Dafa practitioners today.
It is my responsibility to walk the formless path of cultivation well every day, until the last day.
Thank you, venerable Master! Thank you, fellow practitioners!
Please point out anything inappropriate. Thank you!
