While a Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, woman was still recovering from being tortured during a two-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong, she was dealt another heavy blow when the authorities suspended her pension. Ms. Zhang Yulan’s health kept deteriorating and she passed away three years later on December 17, 2020. She was 71.

Ms. Zhang’s son said that, after the Chinese communist regime ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, he had spent less than a year with his mother because she was in and out of detention for her faith. His own daughter had no idea who her grandmother was.

Ms. Zhang used to work as a quality inspector for the Shenyang City Transformer Factory. Due to poor health, she was frequently hospitalized. In 1995, a relative introduced her to Falun Gong and she soon regained her health.

After the persecution began, Ms. Zhang was repeatedly arrested and incarcerated for a total of eight and a half years. She eventually succumbed to the physical, mental, and financial devastation of the persecution and passed away.

Below is a brief timeline of Ms. Zhang’s persecution.

Ms. Zhang was first arrested on July 22, 1999, when she went to the provincial government to appeal for Falun Gong. She was detained at a local stadium.

She was arrested again on July 5, 2000, and detained for a month. She was forced to pay 900 yuan for the food.

Her next arrest was in March 2001 and she was given two and a half years in Masanjia Forced Labor Camp.

Ms. Zhang was arrested again on March 14, 2007, and taken to the Zhangshi Brainwashing Center.

Her fifth arrest was on August 31, 2009. She appeared in the Shenhe District Court on November 27 and was sentenced to four years in Liaoning Province Women’s Prison.

Her last arrest was on April 29, 2015, for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was sentenced to two years by the Dadong District Court and taken to Liaoning Province Women’s Prison. She developed severe symptoms from being tortured in custody.

Beginning in August 2017, the Tiexi District Social Security Bureau suspended Ms. Zhang’s pension, leaving her in an even more dire situation.
