(Minghui.org) A 61-year-old retired college professor was sentenced to 3.5 years in late 2021 for her faith in Falun Gong. Her appeal was rejected by a higher court in April 2022.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Li Jian used to teach at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. She was arrested at home on November 5, 2020 for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong in the residential area around the campus. Her Falun Gong books, informational materials, computer and other personal belongings were confiscated. She was held at the Haizhu District Detention Center.

The police submitted Ms. Li’s case to the Haizhu District Procuratorate on February 25, 2021. She was sentenced to 3.5 years and fined 5,000 yuan by the Haizhu District Court in late 2021. She appealed with the Guangzhou City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold her original verdict on April 25, 2022.

This isn’t the first time that Ms. Li has been targeted for her faith. She was previously arrested on December 28, 2001 for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. The police gave her one year at the Chatou Women’s Forced Labor Camp in Guangzhou.
