(Minghui.org) A man in Linli County, Hunan Province, was arrested on September 8, 2022, and taken to the Changde Brainwashing Center, where he was subjected to intensive brainwashing aimed at forcing him to renounce his faith in Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Taking up Falun Gong
Mr. Fu Jianping, 59, struggled with an acute liver condition and very low energy level from the time he was a child. He was often in the hospital and tried many medications, but nothing helped. After he graduated from high school, he joined the military but had to quit after two years due to his poor health.
He got a job at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China but was soon hit with generalized fatigue. Although only in his 20s, he was very weak and often had to wear extra warm clothes. Not long after, he had to quit work and his girlfriend broke up with him.
For the next few years, he sought medical help everywhere but to no avail.
In May 1996, while in the depths of despair, he ran into to Falun Gong and started to practice it. His long-term back pain, insomnia, bloated stomach, and anorexia soon disappeared. He returned to work in August 1999.
Eleven Years of Incarceration and Torture
Because Mr. Fu refused to renounce Falun Gong in the face of the persecution, he was sentenced twice for a total of 11 years. He was also in a forced labor camp for a year and a half. His wife, Ms. Zhu Guiying, also a Falun Gong practitioner, was arrested multiple times as well and held in a brainwashing center.
Three-year Term
Mr. Fu was arrested in December 2004 for talking to people about Falun Gong. At Sixingang Police Station, he was beaten and forced to kneel. The police handcuffed him and hung him up by his cuffs, his feet completely off the ground. The cuffs cut into his wrists and the sweat from the pain soaked him through.
Because he held a hunger strike to protest the persecution, the inmates force-fed him urine. They also covered him with a comforter and beat him. He hurt all over and had difficulty walking.
Mr. Fu was sentenced to three years in 2005. He was first held in Jinshi Prison and then transferred to Wangling Prison.
Guard Yan Fan arranged three inmates to monitor Mr. Fu around the clock. They once stripped him and shocked him with two electric batons until the batteries ran out when he refused to recite the prison rules. He had egg-sized blisters on his back, and his lips were swollen and bruised. He held a hunger strike to protest. Yan next ordered the inmates to smash his mouth and gums with chopsticks and force feed him. The torture caused long term swelling and pain in his gums.
When Mr. Fu refused to attend the brainwashing session, the guards forced him to stand for ten days without sleep. The inmates took turns watching him. They would open his eyes and shake him and pour cold water into his clothes.
The long-term standing made his legs so swollen that his skin almost split open. He had double vision and couldn’t keep his balance.
Later on, the guards began to force Mr. Fu to work without pay. At night, he had to sit on a small stool until midnight. When Mr. Fu refused to work, the guards forced him to kneel and shocked him with an electric baton on his face and mouth.
Eight-year Term
Mr. Fu was arrested again in 2012 and sentenced to eight years in 2013. He was taken from Jinshi Prison to Wangling Prison on October 26, 2016. He was subjected to long-term standing, electric shocks, and extreme stretching. His family wasn’t allowed to visit him, either.
One day, because he refused to raise his hand during a roll call, the guards ordered several inmates to push him against the wall and then pull his legs out to do a split. He almost fainted from the pain.
Instigated by the guards, three inmates once took turns slapping Mr. Fu in the face when he refused to slander Falun Gong.
Mr. Fu was most often forced to stand. He was only allowed to sleep between 10 and 11 p.m. and 4 and 5 a.m. and had to stand for the rest of the night. He eventually collapsed due to the swelling of his legs. Then the guards began to force him to sit on a small stool. He wasn’t allowed to get up at mealtimes or use the restroom. After he was forced to relieve himself in the pants, the guards didn’t let him change his pants.
On October 1, 2021, a year after he was released, Mr. Fu filed a motion to reconsider his case with the Changde City Intermediate Court, insisting that the court vindicate him. Since he had already served the terms, he mainly hoped to seek justice for Falun Gong so that more people would see how brutal the persecution is. It’s not clear if the court ever responded to him.
Also in October 2021, Wan Dongming, the director of the county 610 Office and deputy secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, attempted to order Mr. Fu to renounce Falun Gong, claiming that provincial officials were coming to town to visit. Mr. Fu refused to comply.
