(Minghui.org) Only two months after a former nurse was released on the verge of death after holding a five-day hunger strike, she was arrested again and is now in a deep coma after one month of detention.
Ms. He Xianggu, a Changsha City, Hunan Province resident, was targeted for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. He, 60, was arrested on March 15, 2021, after being noticed by police for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong in a mall. Officers of the Sifangping Police Station interrogated her until midnight before taking her home to ransack her place. They smashed the metal cabinet she used to store her Falun Gong books and confiscated all of her books.
The police forcibly collected Ms. He’s blood sample, fingerprint, and footprint on the following day. She was given ten days of administrative detention and taken to the Changsha City Lockup at around 8:00 p.m.
Ms. He started a hunger strike a few days later to protest the arbitrary detention. Five days later, she began to have difficulty breathing. Her face was pale and she was very weak. While squeezing her lower jaw while force-feeding her with water, a male officer crushed one of her teeth and wounded her lip. Her mouth was full of blood.
On the verge of death, Ms. He was released on March 28. When a friend saw her shortly after, she was shocked to see how soon Ms. He had aged during her short detention––her once-rosy and radiant face was covered with wrinkles and her hair had turned gray.
Just as Ms. He recovered, she was arrested again by officers of the Jiucaiyuan Police Station on May 16. She was held at the Changsha City No. 1 Detention Center, where she fell into a coma a month later. It’s not clear what happened to her in the detention center that caused her to lose consciousness.
On July 3, Ms. He’s family received a call from the police, who told them to go pick her up at the Changsha City No.1 Hospital. When they got there, Ms. He was already in a coma. They cried and called her name, but she did not respond. Her sister insisted that the doctor give her emergency care. She was admitted to an intensive care unit on July 4 and has been unconscious ever since
Ms. He has been repeatedly arrested for her faith during the past 22 years of persecution. She served four labor camp terms and was held in brainwashing centers three times. For refusing to renounce her faith, she was also fired by the hospital where she worked and denied retirement benefits.
