(Minghui.org) Mr. Luan Changhui’s family was informed by the local court on November 30, 2021, that he was sentenced to four years for his faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Luan, a boat engineer in Huludao City, Liaoning Province, was arrested at work on July 20, 2021, by a group of officers led by Sun Yuzhu, the head of Bianfang Police Station. Wang Fubiao of the Longgang District Procuratorate approved Mr. Luan’s arrest on August 3.
On August 10, Mr. Luan’s family filed complaints against police chief Sun, deputy police chief Liu Bing, officer Liu Penguu and prosecutor Wang. They also wrote to the city and provincial level officials, as well as those in the central government, trying to seek justice for their loved ones.
Prosecutor Wang later moved Mr. Luan’s case to the Lianshan District Procuratorate and prosecutor Long Dan indicted him on September 24.
Mr. Luan was tried at the Huludao City Detention Center by the Lianshan District Court on November 24. Both his lawyer and wife, who represented him as a family defender, requested judge Li Fushan to remove his handcuff during the hearing. The judge denied the request with the excuse that he didn’t have the key and that it’s the detention center’s internal rule to keep handcuffs on.
Prosecutor Long accused Mr. Luan of “undermining law enforcement with a cult organization,” yet he didn’t provide any evidence to support the charge, only showing the list of items confiscated from Mr. Luan and several photos of the items.
Mr. Luan’s wife, Ms. Liu Cong, requested the prosecutor to exhibit all evidence in court for cross-examination. She said that the prosecutor failed to provide a clear explanation of what law was undermined by her husband and how. Both the prosecutor and judge remained silent.
Ms. Liu said that as the wife of a Falun Gong practitioner, she knew that he didn’t do anything wrong, but only strives to be a good person. “For the past two decades, countless Falun Gong practitioners were imprisoned, simply for upholding their faith. I believe that as prosecutors and judges, you also know that the practitioners are innocent, but you are still following the persecution policy in prosecuting and convicting the practitioners.”
Both she and the lawyer demanded the judge follow his conscience in ruling the case and acquit Mr. Luan.
The judge adjourned the hearing one hour later and said he would announce the verdict without having another hearing. He handed down a four-year sentence against Mr. Luan six days later.
Mr. Luan’s family is now appealing the sentence with the Huludao City Intermediate Court.
Mr. Luan was the fourth practitioner sentenced by judge Li and prosecutor Long within a month. The other three practitioners sentenced earlier were Ms. Gao Hua, Mr. Wang Yandong and Mr. Zhao Huanzhen
