(Minghui.org) A Foshan City, Guangdong Province, resident was tried by the Chancheng District Court on August 5, 2020, through a teleconference for her faith in Falun Gong, an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Li Yanqun, 65, was arrested at home on March 17, 2020. It took her daughter more than two months to find out that she had been detained in a psychiatric hospital. The authorities denied her family's and lawyer’s visits, citing the coronavirus epidemic.
At Ms. Li’s lawyer’s strong demand, the court finally allowed him to have a virtual meeting with Ms. Li twenty minutes before the hearing, but the meeting was canceled by the judge at the last minute. The lawyer wasn’t given a chance to enter a not guilty plea for her during the hearing.
Ms. Li was taken to a detention center to attend the virtual hearing there. Two of her family members were allowed to watch the online hearing in the courthouse. They told a Minghui correspondent that the audio effect was very poor and they could barely hear what was said during the hearing.
When the prosecutor read the list of items confiscated from her, Ms. Li said that the police searched her home after her arrest when no one was around and that she couldn’t confirm whether those items were hers.
The judge adjourned the hearing without announcing the verdict.
