People Who Live by Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance (Part I)

November 01, 2019 |   By a Falun Dafa practitioner in China

(Minghui.org) I once heard a story about a customer in a restaurant offering the owner’s little girl something to eat. The little girl declined, telling the customer, “Mommy doesn't let me eat the food in our restaurant because it's bad.”

The story points out a sad yet true phenomenon in China: restaurant owners refuse to eat their own food, knowing exactly what’s in it. Similarly, builders don’t live in the houses they build, milk vendors won’t drink the milk they sell, and vaccine manufacturers wouldn’t dream of being injected with the vaccines they make.

When everyone is conning everybody else, everyone becomes a victim. The traditional virtues are disappearing in China. People are following the exact opposite of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The culture of bribery and deception in China has corroded everyone’s quality of life: kids whose parents don’t give gifts to their teachers are discriminated against at schools; patients who don’t bribe their doctors get poorer treatment. You can be scammed wherever you go.

As people navigate through these dark times, let’s not forget that there are people who still want to do the right thing and ask for nothing in return. They are Falun Dafa practitioners, and their behavior is truly an inspiration.

Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline based on three core principles: Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Dafa practitioners come from all walks of life and all social strata. They live by the three principles and hold themselves to high moral standards.

This is the first of a four-part series that profiles a selection of Falun Dafa practitioners and how they live according to Dafa's principles.

Part I. Doctors Who Want the Best for Their Patients

Many medical professionals take commissions from drug companies for prescribing their drugs or suggest unnecessary checkups to run up the bills. Patients can go bankrupt if their condition is serious. To make matters worse, sometimes the treatment is not effective, leaving the patients devastated. But if you ever were to come across the following doctors, you would be very fortunate indeed.

Dr. Lu Places Her Patients in the Highest Priority

Ms. Lu Yuying, a physician in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, was a burn specialist. When poor people could not pay, Ms. Lu would tell them to get treated first and worry about the money later. Burn treatment is expensive, and bills can run up to 30,000 yuan. Ms. Lu charged no more than 2,000 yuan and her patients seldom ended up with permanent scars. If her patients still could not afford to pay, she treated them for free. She told them to thank Falun Dafa because she would not have been so kind if she wasn't a Dafa practitioner.

Ms. Lu was arrested for practicing Falun Dafa and sent to a local brainwashing Center in 2011. Many of her patients who had to travel long distances to see her were devastated that she was not there when they showed up at the hospital.

The “One-shot” Doctor

Mr. Zhou Wensheng from Zhaodong City, Heilongjiang Province took exceptionally good care of his patients, even when they couldn’t afford to pay. He prescribed the right dose of medicine to cure the exact symptoms and he was very affordable. Many of his patients called him “one shot,” because their problems were almost always resolved with one visit to his office.

When Mr. Zhou was arrested for refusing to renounce his faith in Falun Dafa, over 700 local residents petitioned for his immediate release, but Mr. Zhou was still sentenced to three years in prison.

An Extraordinarily Skilled Doctor

Ms. Tian Qingling, now 46, from Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, practiced Chinese medicine. She was sickly from the time she was a child. After practicing Falun Dafa, her uterine cysts miraculously disappeared. She no longer had a bad temper and became kind and easygoing. One winter day, the natural gas line leaked, and she was overcome by the fumes. She was unconscious for a day but woke up on her own, suffering no ill effects. She had no doubt that Master Li Hongzhi (the founder of Falun Dafa) had saved her life.

Ms. Tian earned a Master’s degree in 2005 and began working at the Harbin Chinese Medicine Hospital. She focused on kidney and blood problems, and tumors. Most of her patients were severely ill and had already been to the hospital several times. Many of their families had spent almost everything they had on medical expenses. Ms. Tian knew how her patients felt and gave them the exact drugs they needed at the lowest prices.

Ms. Tian’s knowledge of Chinese medicine was extensive. She could detect her patients’ ailments just by feeling their pulses. She usually prescribed 7 to 10 different herbs, which worked wonders and cost as little as 8 yuan (US$1).

She often suggested to her patients that they practice Falun Dafa for an even better outcome. One of her patients had terminal liver cancer and an extremely swollen abdomen. Ms. Tian advised him to recite “Falun Dafa is good” after giving him a prescription. He heeded the advice and his abdomen shrank significantly. Soon, he could eat again.

The section chief and head nurse used to care only about making a profit. Influenced by Ms. Tian, they too took good care of their patients. The doctors and nurses at the Chinese Medicine hospital got along like family.

Over time, more and more patients sought out Ms. Tian due to word-of-mouth. When she was assigned to the Emergency Department for a month, her patients followed her. She said, “Falun Dafa gave me wisdom and that is why I could treat people so successfully.”

The good doctor was arrested for her faith on December 8, 2011. She was taken from her apartment and detained in Qianjin Women's Forced Labor Camp, where she was shocked with electric batons, beaten, and forced to do unpaid labor. She was tortured so severely that she is now a paraplegic.

A Military Doctor Encounters a Miracle

Before she retired, Ms. Wang Weizhen had attained the rank of colonel and was a teacher at Dalian Military Medical School of the Shenyang Military Region in Liaoning Province. She had problems with her heart, liver, kidneys, joints, and spine and was in constant pain. As good a doctor as she was, she couldn't cure herself. She sought out renowned doctors, only to find herself in despair.

Ms. Wang began practicing Falun Dafa in 1996. After that, she didn’t concern herself with professional titles, reputation, or self-interest. She looked young and beautiful and had boundless energy. People were amazed by Falun Dafa's miraculous effect and the tremendous changes they saw in her.

When her employer gave out welfare housing, she gave up what was rightfully hers to someone in need and moved farther away. When there was a chance for promotion, she would pass it up to give others the opportunity. Many of her coworkers, touched by her kindness and selflessness, began to practice Falun Dafa with her.

Ms. Wang worked hard and was highly regarded by her coworkers. Her patients wanted to give her gifts, but she wouldn’t take anything. She worked in a private clinic after she retired. Sometimes the patients wouldn’t take their money back, so Ms. Wang would take it to her boss and have him return it.

After the persecution started in 1999, the authorities arrested Ms. Wang seven times. She is now in Liaoning Women’s Prison serving an eight-year sentence that began in January 2017.

Patient Recovers from Paralysis, Marries the Doctor

Mr. Xu Faling graduated from Henan Medical University and worked in the University’s 2nd Affiliated Hospital. Everyone who knew him said that he was very honest and conscientious. His rheumatoid arthritis disappeared after he became a Falun Dafa practitioner in 1996. The following year he met a young blind woman in a wheelchair who had neurological problems that had left her paralyzed from the neck down. She once attempted to kill herself before she picked up Falun Dafa. Mr. Xu encouraged her to be a steadfast practitioner and took care of her. Defying all odds, she was soon able to stand and even walk with assistance. They later married and had a healthy baby.

Mr. Xu was sent to a forced labor camp in 2003 and again in 2006, for a total of three years. He was fired from his job. Sadly, his wife left him and gave up the practice out of the fear of being persecuted herself. She then got sick and died when their daughter was only two.

A Caring Doctor

Before Ms. Huang Liping retired, she was the chief gynecologist and a professor at the Wuhan Integrated Chinese and Western Hospital in Hubei Province. She was frequently praised in the media for her outstanding accomplishments in the treatment of infertility. In high demand, she worked long hours and eventually developed multiple health problems, including headaches, cataracts, sinusitis, cystitis, and arthritis.

The worst was cervical spondylosis, which caused severe pain in her neck, shoulders, and hands. She tried all kinds of Chinese and Western medicine, but nothing helped.

In December 1995, Dr. Huang heard about the healing power of Falun Dafa from one of her patients and started to practice it. Within three months, she could see clearly without glasses, and all her other ailments completely disappeared.

Dr. Huang used to strive for fame and profit. She hung her certificates and plaques all over the walls of her examination room to show off, and she accepted whatever gifts her patients offered her.

After she took up the practice of Falun Dafa, Dr. Huang took down her plaques and certificates and no longer accepted gifts. When it would have been unkind to refuse a gift, she gave the patient one in return. She also returned to her patients the valuable items she had received in the past.

Even though Dr. Huang is now retired, patients still come to see her. She always welcomes them warmly and diagnoses them with care.

This outstanding physician was arrested and tortured in a brainwashing center for more than three months for refusing to give up her belief. She filed a criminal complaint in July 2015 with the Supreme People's Procuratorate against former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin who launched the persecution.

Doctors and a Nurse Who Never Take Bribes

1. A man in Hebei Province told a surgeon about a friend whose father had a ruptured stomach and intestinal cancer. The friend put 1,000 yuan in the surgeon’s hand and begged him to save his father’s life. The surgeon didn’t want to take the money but the friend insisted, so the surgeon took it and left. The surgery was successful. The day his father was discharged, the surgeon gave him a receipt for the deposit of the hospital stay. “Here is the 1,000 yuan I used for your deposit. I am a Falun Dafa practitioner and I don’t take money from patients.”

2. Mr. Li Lizhuang graduated from Harbin Medical University in Heilongjiang Province in 1995 and became a Falun Dafa practitioner that same year. He worked hard to improve his professional skills so that he could better help people.

Mr. Li became an orthopedic surgeon at Harbin Medical University’s First Affiliated Hospital. He never took money from his patients, and instead he always went one step further to help them. One of his patients couldn’t afford to have a required blood test. Not wanting to put off the surgery, Mr. Li paid for the blood test and did the operation himself. It cost him 1,000 yuan. His monthly salary was 300 yuan a month at the time.

Mr. Li was sent to prison for four years for speaking up for Falun Dafa after the persecution started. In Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp in Harbin, he was beaten, shocked with electric batons, cuffed to an iron chair, and water-boarded. He was also sexually assaulted, with his penis yanked and testicles squeezed.

3. Mr. Wang Jiansheng was the head of the Huanggang City Telecommunications Bureau health clinic in Hubei Province. After becoming a Falun Dafa practitioner, Mr. Wang recovered from a slipped disc, stomach inflammation, and a failing liver. Many people who witnessed this also started to practice Falun Dafa.

In the Chinese health care system it is very common for pharmaceutical companies to bribe physicians and hospital officials to promote the sales of their drugs. Mr. Wang’s colleague said to the salespeople, “Please stop sending us gifts. Doctor Wang practices Falun Dafa and he does not accept presents.” After Mr. Wang assumed leadership of the health clinic, there was never a single case of medical misconduct.

4. After Nurse May from Liaoning Province picked up Falun Dafa in 1995, she stopped accepting money from patients. One day a patient stuck 100 yuan in her hand right before the operation and wouldn’t take it back. To not delay the surgery, she took the money but gave it back to the patient afterward. May told her, “You need to eat better now so you can recover quickly. I appreciate your kind intention but you will need the money for your own use.”

Another time May saw a patient crying because she hadn't known that she needed a blood test and didn’t have the money to pay for it. She was from out of town and didn’t know anyone who could help. May lent her the money and told her to get the test done. The patient returned the money on her next visit to the hospital.

5. Mr. Chen Guoqing was a doctor at the Agricultural Management Bureau Hospital in Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province. His wife Ms. Han Yuqin was a head nurse at the same hospital. They both practiced Falun Dafa and never took money from their patients. When it was hard to turn the patients down in person, they would accept it so the patients could feel safe during the surgery. The money would be put into the patients’ deposits for their hospital stay so that they would get the money back when they were discharged.

Ms. Han sometimes accidentally broke bottles as she was preparing prescriptions. She would use her own savings to replace them, rather than pass the cost along to the hospital.

This couple was arrested many times after the persecution of Falun Dafa started. They both lost their jobs. Ms. Han died as a result of torture for refusing to renounce her faith.

“I Think You Are a Bodhisattva”

A woman became a good doctor after she began practicing Falun Dafa. She treated every patient with great care and tried to minimize their expenses. She refused to accept gifts from her patients or from pharmaceutical and other healthcare companies. Her patients trusted her.

This doctor was arrested and detained after she went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Dafa. She told the police why the persecution was wrong and they understood that she was an honest and caring doctor because of her faith. After she returned to work, the police officers and officials from the appeals office referred their friends and relatives to her.

Her husband felt that she had changed for the better and that the patients really trusted her. He encouraged her to stick to what she believed in despite the persecution. A friend of her husband told her, “I've never seen a Bodhisattva, but I think you are one.” The hospital chief, knowing what a great doctor she was, many times fended off the officers who didn’t know the truth of the persecution and came to the hospital to harass her.

When her colleagues referred patients to her, they said, “She isn't just a good doctor, but an extraordinarily good individual.”
