Former Math Professor Sentenced to 3.5 Years for Talking to People about Her Faith
(Minghui.org) A 54-year-old former college professor from Guangdong was recently sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for talking to people about her faith in Falun Gong. This took place less than two years after she was released from a nine-year prison term, also for her faith.
Ms. Wang Jiafang's latest persecution started from a conversation she had with a local resident while walking in a park near her home on September 8, 2017. Because of her mentioning Falun Gong in the conversation, she was reported to the park security office. Five officers forcibly threw her out of the park.
Hoping to let the park security personnel know about Falun Gong and the persecution by the communist regime, Ms. Wang wrote letters to the park management and security department shortly after the incident.
After a few days, she went to the park management office, seeking a face-to-face conversation with the staff members.
Although the park director Liu Dexin said to her that the park welcomes her and promised that the security personnel would not harass her again, he reported Ms. Wang to the police upon finding that the handwriting on the letters they received days earlier matched with hers on the park office visitors' log.
On October 27, 2017, Ms. Wang was arrested at the northeast entrance of the park.
The police detained her at Yuexiu District Detention Center. There, a guard kicked her and she suffered from acute pain in her liver. After several months of detention, all of her hair had turned gray.
Liwan District Court tried her on April 9, 2018. She was charged with “undermining law enforcement,” a standard pretext used to criminalize Falun Gong practitioners.
She was brought back to Liwan District Court for the sentencing hearing on August 24, 2018 and was given a 3.5-year term at the prison. She protested and vowed to appeal the sentence.
